CIA’s Pre-College Program welcomed 85 high school students from around the country this summer. During this two-week residential program, students used the tools and processes otherwise available only to our students. The program culminated in an exhibition and celebration of their work on Friday, July 25. Please join us in congratulating these gifted students and their accomplishments!

Philosophy escapes the ivory tower in provocative documentary EXAMINED LIFE A group of academic superstars -- including Slavoj Zizek and Cornel West (above) -- are captured thinking on their feet (and in cars) in the new nonfiction film EXAMINED LIFE, showing Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. These thinkers and philosophers riff on life and its meaning while traversing some of their favorite spaces and places. Watch the trailer here and then catch the whole film this weekend. ALIEN & ALIENS back to back on Saturday; can you stomach both in one sitting? Ridley Scott's 1979 outer space thriller ALIEN is one of the scariest movies of all time. James Cameron's 1986 follow-up, ALIENS, is one of the best action flicks ever made. You can see both films in new 35mm color and scope prints this week! Both show back to back starting at 7:20 pm on Saturday night. Print this post and present it at the box office on Saturday and see both movies that night for only $12 ($10 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit of two people per print-out.) But those who can't come on Saturday should know that "Alien" repeats on Sunday, and "Aliens" shows again next Thursday. Michel Piccoli stars in rare WOMAN IN BLUE THE WOMAN IN BLUE is a little-known-in-America Michel Deville film about a man who becomes obsessed with a woman he spots in a shop one day. He drops everything to find her again, and even enlists his lover in the search. This 1973 French movie became a favorite of Cinematheque Director John Ewing after he showed it in 1981 at the Canton Film Society, his pre-Cinematheque film series. Don't miss it in a 35mm color print from France this Sunday afternoon! And the 8-minute short movie showing before it, Arne Sucksdorff's 1948 Swedish nature film "A Divided World," is itself worth the price of admission -- which in this special case is $10, members/CIA $7. It's baaaaaaack: THE ROOM Tommy Wiseau's so-bad-it's-funny 2003 "drama" THE ROOM is back for another late-night show on Friday -- its sixth screening at the Cinematheque! We're going to keep showing it until you see it! SUSPIRIA offers back-to-school shivers A European ballet academy is run by witches (and you thought your college administrators were bad!) in Dario Argento's SUSPIRIA, a stylish 1977 horror masterpiece that stars Jessica Harper. This Thursday and Sunday we show this popular cult classic in its uncut version (six minutes longer than the U.S. cut) and in a 35mm archive print from England. This is an original I.B. Technicolor print of the film, so the colors will not have faded at all. And what colors they are! Special admission $10, Cinematheque members and CIA students/staff $7. John Ewing catches 18 films at Toronto International Film Festival Cinematheque Director John Ewing spent last weekend at the Toronto International Film Festival, where he saw the following 18 films: Lars von Trier's "Antichrist"; Yorgos Lanthimos' "Dogtooth"; Mark Lewis' "Backstory" and "Cinema Museum"; Serge Bromberg's "L'Enfer de Henri-Georges Clouzot"; Hong Sang-soo's "Like You Know It All"; Gaspar Noe's "Enter the Void"; Bruno Dumont's "Hadewijch"; Pen-ek Ratanaruang's "Nymph"; Corneliu Porumboiu"s "Police, Adjective"; Hirokazu Kore-eda's "Air Doll"; Tsai Ming-liang's "Face"; Buddhadeb Dasgupta's "The Window"; Fatih Akin"s "Soul Kitchen"; Marco Bellocchio's "Vincere"; Samuel Maoz's "Lebanon"; Manoel de Oliveira's "Eccentricities of a Blond Hair Girl"; and Gyorgy Palfi's "I Am Not Your Friend." Watch for many of these in the future at the Cinematheque, the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland International Film Festival, or Cedar-Lee.
