"Best British Film" THE THIRD MAN returns in new 4K digital restoration!
Named the “Best British Film of the 20th Century” by the British Film Institute in 1999, Carol Reed’s celebrated, suspenseful 1949 film noir THE THIRD MAN is set in rubble-strewn, post-WWII Vienna. There a naïve American writer of pulp crime fiction (Joseph Cotten) searches for his old friend Harry Lime, who may be dead—or worse. Orson Welles, Alida Valli, and Trevor Howard star in this beloved masterpiece written by Graham Greene, with Oscar-winning camerawork by Robert Krasker and an immortal zither score by Anton Karas. See it in a new 4K digital restoration on Friday or Saturday.
Satyajit Ray's "Apu Triology" continues with part 2, APARAJITO (THE UNVANQUISHED)
In APARAJITO, the second part of Satyajit Ray’s celebrated “Apu Trilogy,” the young Indian boy Apu drifts apart from his mother and leaves home to go to college in Calcutta. Ravi Shankar did the music for this Indian classic that will be shown Saturday at 5pm in a new 4K digital restoration. It also shows two other times in August, as does Pather Panchali (part 1 of the trilogy). Part 3, Apur Sansar (The World of Apu) shows three times on 8/23, 29, and 30. Watch a trailer about the restored "Apu Trilogy" here.
Shirley Clarke's jazz doc ORNETTE: MADE IN AMERICA shows in new 35mm restoration; two special guests appear on Sat.
Saxophonist and free jazz legend Ornette Coleman, who died in June, was the subject of the ORNETTE: MADE IN AMERICA, the final feature film by pioneering American independent filmmaker Shirley Clarke (Portrait of Jason, The Connection). Clarke follows Coleman as he returns to his hometown of Fort Worth, Texas, in 1983, then tries to approximate his music with a free-flowing blend of interviews, performance footage, experimental music videos, and historical reenactments. William S. Burroughs, Buckminster Fuller, Yoko Ono, Robert Palmer, and others appear in this 1985 film that has been restored and brought back to theaters as part of “Project Shirley,” an initiative of Milestone Film and Video to restore and re-release all the films of Shirley Clarke. Ornette: Made in America shows from 35mm film on Saturday and next Tuesday, August 18. On Saturday night, the co-founders and principals of Milestone, Amy Heller and Dennis Doros, will accompany the movie, discussing Clarke and their new restorations. Special admission is $10; members, CIA I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under $8; no passes, twofers, or radio winners. Here's the film's trailer.
See three RESTORED FILMS OF RICHARD MYERS, with Richard Myers in person!
Richard Myers (b. 1937) is the dean of northeast Ohio filmmakers and one of the most prominent experimental filmmakers in the U.S. Winner of two Guggenheim Fellowships and an American Film Institute grant, Myers has shown his dream-based 16mm movies at MoMA, the Whitney, the Ann Arbor Film Festival, the National Film Theater in London, and the Venice Film Festival, among others. They have been praised by Pauline Kael, Roger Ebert, Stan Brakhage, and Amos Vogel (to name just a few), and are now in the process of being restored and preserved by the Archive of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood. On Tuesday night at 6:45pm Myers will be present to show and discuss three of his newly preserved 16mm movies during a program entitled RESTORED FILMS OF RICHARD MYERS. The three are: The Path(1960, 20 min.), the first film in Myers’ 40+ year filmmaking career; Akbar(1970, 16 min., pictured above), a portrait of Ahmed Akbar, a black filmmaker and former student of Myers at Kent State University; and an excerpt from Myers’ dazzling, dizzying 118-min. opus Akran (1969). Print this email and present it at the box office and see this show for only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print out)
Black comedy A PIGEON SAT ON A BRANCH REFLECTING ON EXISTENCE will also have you reflecting on existence
Winner of the Golden Lion for Best Film at the 2014 Venice Int’l Film Festival, Roy Andersson's A PIGEON SAT ON A BRANCH REFLECTING ON EXISTENCE concludes a trilogy begun with Songs from the Second Floor (2000) and You, the Living (2007). Like those previous masterpieces,Pigeon consists of a series of painterly, fixed-camera tableaux (37 to be exact) in which pasty-faced everymen enact the absurdist, deadpan slapstick of being human. Salesmen sell, lovers neck, people dance, drink, and die. It’s a droll parade of human folly teetering on an existential precipice, and it variously evokes Jacques Tati, Wes Anderson, and Samuel Beckett. Milan Paurich, writing for The Cleveland Movie Blog, calls the movie "some kind of masterpiece“ and "the funniest sad movie I've ever seen, or the saddest funny movie." Read the complete rave review here. Then catch our final screening of it on Friday at 7pm.
RTA Red Line Little Italy station to open today
RTA's new Little Italy station on the Red Line is due to open on Tuesday, August 11 (today) at 6:30pm. This station, located on Mayfield Rd. on the east side of the railroad bridge, is just a few hundred feet from the Cinematheque's entry doors. This coming weekend would be a good time to use it, given the crowds (and the attendant parking complications) expected during the Feast of the Assumption in Little Italy. There's more information about the new station here.
WARNING: The Feast of the Assumption in Little Italy is this weekend, so allow extra time to park, or be prepared to pay to park, or take public transportation to this weekend's movies. The new Little Italy station on the RTA Red Line is now open.
