Czech medieval epic MARKETA LAZAROVÁ shows in new 35mm scope print
Voted the best Czech movie of all time in a 1998 poll of Czech film critics, František Vláčil's stirring 1967 medieval epic MARKETA LAZAROVÁ is set at the time that Christianity replaced paganism. This two-hour-and-42-minute movie chronicles a kidnapping that ignites a feud between two rival clans. The Time Out Film Guide calls the film “pure cinema…stark, daring and often astoundingly dynamic…near hallucinatory…not so much a drama as an ancient litany—mystical and feral rather than spiritual or religious.” Catch its Cleveland revival premiere in a new 35mm scope print on Saturday at 6:50 pm. Special admission is $11; members, CIA I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under $9; no passes, twofers, or radio winners will be honored or accepted. Support for this film comes from the Cinematheque’s George Gund III endowment.
Juliette Binoche stars in FLIGHT OF THE RED BALLOON by Hou Hsiao-hsien
Juliette Binoche stars in FLIGHT OF THE RED BALLOON, the first (and only) film that Hou Hsiao-hsien made outside of Asia. Produced by the Musée d’Orsay, it’s one of the director’s most rapturous works. Inspired by Albert Lamorisse’s 1956 kid-film classic The Red Balloon, Hou’s 2007 movie tells of a Taiwanese film student in Paris who is hired by a frazzled single mom (Binoche) to be nanny to her seven-year-old son. Film critic J. Hobrerman calls it “a movie of genius.” See it in 35mm when it concludes our three-month Hou retrospective on Friday at 7:00pm. Special admission is $12; members, CIA I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under $9; no passes, twofers, or radio winners will be honored or accepted. Watch the trailer here.
Unreleased 1984 comedy NOTHING LASTS FOREVER makes belated local debut
So strange and unclassifiable that it was never released theatrically, the 1984 sci-fi comedy NOTHING LASTS FOREVER was written and directed by longtime Saturday Night Live writer and filmmaker Tom Schiller and produced by Lorne Michaels. Zach Galligan, Lauren Tom, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Mort Sahl star in the movie, which is set in a surreal future where the iron-fisted Port Authority controls NYC. The film follows an aspiring artist who goes to work in the Holland Tunnel, discovers a society of powerful bums and tramps living underground, and takes a bus to the moon. Old newsreels, classic film clips, and assorted celebrity cameos add to the comic craziness.Nothing Lasts Forever receives its Cleveland theatrical premiere on Friday at 9:15pm. Special admission is $10; members, CIA I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under $8; no passes, twofers, or radio winners will be honored or accepted.
1961 THE HAND IN THE TRAP may be Leopoldo Torre Nilsson's greatest film
In THE HAND IN THE TRAP (which may be Leopoldo Torre Nilsson’s greatest film), a convent schoolgirl (Elsa Daniel), home for the summer, decides that she wants to meet the mysterious recluse who has been living in solitary confinement on the third floor of her spooky, seen-better-days house for more than 20 years. The shocking truth ensnares her as well. Francisco Rabal co-stars in this 1961 Argentine/Spanish classic that shows Saturday at 5:00pm. Print this email and present it at the box office and pay only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member); it's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out)
Vending machines vanish
The latest casualty from this summer's gradual closing of the art institute's East Boulevard building is the bank of vending machines in the student lounge. The machines were removed earlier this week, so moviegoers who want to chew on more than the film they are watching should bring their own snacks. We apologize for the inconvenience.
