Alex Fegan's THE IRISH PUB celebrates what its makers call “the greatest institution in Irish society.” The movie profiles some of Ireland's venerable watering holes renowned not only for the warmth, wit, and wisdom of their habitués but also for the barkeeps and families who own and operate them, often for generations. BECOMING BULLETPROOF, voted "best film" at this year's Cleveland Int'l Film Festival, returns to the North Coast
Winner of the Roxanne T. Mueller Award for best film at this year’s Cleveland Int’l Film Festival, the exhilarating and touching new documentary BECOMING BULLETPROOF focuses on a group of people with disabilities who take major acting roles in an independently produced Western being filmed on vintage Hollywood locations. THE HUNTING GROUND explores sexual assaults on U.S. college campuses
THE HUNTING GROUND is a provocative new documentary from Kirby Dick, director of This Film Is Not Yet Rated and The Invisible War. It is an exposé of the epidemic of sexual assaults and rape on U.S. college campuses and also delves into the institutional cover-up of many of these crimes. Larry ("Kids," "Bully") ventures to Texas for his latest portrait of teens, MARFA GIRL
MARFA GIRL, the lyrical new film from Larry Clark, director of Kids andBully, is a snapshot of life in the desolate West Texas town of Marfa, where a 16-year-old boy enamored of drugs, sex, and skateboarding interacts with a gallery of colorful locals—from his mom and girlfriend to a racist Border Patrol officer and the uninhibited artist of the film’s title.The Los Angeles Times found the movie “weirdly memorable.” Adults can catch its exclusive Cleveland premiere Sunday at 8:10pm. Asghar Farhadi's Iranian drama ABOUT ELLY receives belated U.S. release
ABOUT ELLY, the multiple prize winner that Iranian master Asghar Farhadi made just before his Oscar-winning A Separation (2011), was unreleased in the U.S. until a few weeks ago. Golshifteh Farahani stars in this taut tale of a fateful seaside holiday that is spoiled when one of the vacationers, a young woman, mysteriously disappears. TheInternational Film Guide 2010 called it “a milestone in Iranian cinema.” It also won Best Narrative Feature at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival, and now that it has opened in New York, is getting rave reviews and has an overall metacritic.com score of 88 out of 100. Hou Hsiao-hsien series "Also Like Life" opens with director's nostalgic fifth feature A SUMMER AT GRANDPA'S
n Hou Hsiao-hsien's lovely, lyrical idyll A SUMMER AT GRANDPA'S, two children from Taipei—a 12-year-old boy and his younger sister—spend the summer at their grandfather’s house in the country when their mother is hospitalized. Critic Alan Stanbrook calls this 1984 work, Hou's fifth feature, “[his] sunniest picture…His most Ozu-like film.” See it in an imported 35mm color print on Saturday at 5 pm. It will be preceded at showtime by Hou’s two most recent movies, both shorts:The Electric Princess Picture House (France, 2007), a tribute to Robert Bresson from the anthology film Chacun son cinema (we will show two different versions lasting 3 min. & 4 min.) and La Belle Epoque (Taiwan, 2011, 5 min.), Hou’s contribution to the omnibus film 10+10. Special admission to this program is $12; members, CIA I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under $9; no passes, twofers, or radio winners will be accepted.

Filmmaker John Ennis appears with his new doc PAY 2 PLAY, about money in politics
Ohio’s 2005 “Coingate” scandal is one of the cases explored in PAY 2 PLAY: DEMOCRACY’S HIGH STAKES, John Wellington Ennis' new film about the corrosive effects of money in politics. (Also covered: the Citizens United and Hobby Lobby cases, the Koch brothers, etc.) California filmmaker Ennis, who will appear in person to answer audience questions after the screening, shows us how to take back our democracy. Lawrence Lessig, Noam Chomsky, Jack Abramoff, Robert Reich, and others also appear in the movie, which shows Sunday at 4pm. Watch the trailer here. Special thanks to David Olajos.
