7/17-19: Chuck Jones, Anita Hill, Alejandro Jodorowsky & more!

THE DANCE OF REALITY is first film in 23 years by Alejandro ("El Topo") Jodorowsky THE DANCE OF REALITY is the first feature in 23 years from Alejandro Jodorowsky, the director of the cult classics El Topo, The Holy Mountain, and Santa Sangre. And it's a triumph! The NY Times calls it "something very close to a masterpiece," and The Village Voice says it “may be Alejandro Jodorowsky's best film." The movie finds the Chilean/French octogenarian, a self-proclaimed "psychomagician," returning to the coastal Chile of his childhood to tell a singularly strange tale of growing up: a kind of Spanish-language Amarcord that blends autobiography with metaphor, myth, and poetry. It teems with grotesque and colorful characters, surreal incidents, and indelible images. Essential viewing! Don't miss its Cleveland premiere on Friday or Saturday. Here's the trailer. Jodorowsky himself stars in Jodorowsky's Dune (see below), a fascinating new documentary about a movie he was never able to pull off.

JORDOROWSKY'S DUNE documents a visionary sci-fi epic that might have been
After directing the midnight/cult movie classics El Topo and The Holy Mountain, Chilean-French auteur Alejandro Jodorowsky turned his attention to a grand, multi-million-dollar film version of Frank Herbert's epic sci-fi novel Dune. With an incredible cast consisting of Orson Welles, Salvador Dali, Mick Jagger, David Carradine, and others, art work by H.R. Giger and French comic book artist Moebius, special effects by Dan O'Bannon, and music by Pink Floyd, this was going to be a movie to remember! Unfortunately, for lack of financing, it was never made. But hundreds of drawings and sketches from the project still survive, and they are brought to life in Frank Pavich's inspiring new documentary JODOROWSKY'S DUNE, one of this year's best films. The ebullient Jodorowsky, now 85, walks us through his visionary masterpiece that might have been (which nevertheless influenced Star Wars, Alien, and a host of other sci-fi films that followed). Don't miss this movie on Thursday or Friday when we bring it back to Cleveland. On Friday night you can stay and see Jodorowsky’s latest film, The Dance of Reality (see above). And on Saturday night, we show another documentary about another unfinished motion picture magnum opus, Persistence of Vision (see below). Watch the trailer for Jodorowsky's Dune here.

Strangely enough, there was this article about Chuck Jones in this past Sunday's New York Times.

PERSISTENCE OF VISION tells the story of the greatest animated film never made
PERSISTENCE OF VISION is an account of what has been called “the greatest animated film never made.” Kevin Schreck's new documentary focuses on the three-decade effort of Richard Williams (Oscar-winning animation director of Who Framed Roger Rabbit?) to realize his dream project, The Thief and the Cobbler. This epic inspired by the Arabian Nights was ultimately taken out of Williams’ hands while still unfinished, and released in various bastardized versions around the world. Filmmaker Schreck tells the story behind this aborted magnum opus by weaving together mind-blowing animation, rare archival footage, and interviews with key artists who worked on the project. Indiewire calls the film "[a] Herculean accomplishment…A heartbreaking account of a thwarted animated masterpiece.” Animator Bill Plympton says it's "an amazing film about an amazing artist," adding, "If it plays near you, rush out and see Persistence of Vision.” The film receives its Ohio premiere on Saturday night. Here's the trailer.

Anita Hill is subject of Freida Lee Mock's ANITA: SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER
Anita Hill, the outspoken law professor who brought sexual harassment charges against Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas during his confirmation hearings, is the subject of ANITA: SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER. This acclaimed new film by Oscar-winning documentarian Freida Lee Mock (Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision) was a hit at the 2013 Cleveland International Film Festival. It returns to Cleveland for one more show on Thursday night. Print this email and present it at the box office and see Anita for only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member).
