9/12-15: Richard Linklater's Before trilogy, Miyazaki's Nausicaa & more!

Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy fall in love in Richard Linklater's BEFORE SUNRISE
In the 1995 film BEFORE SUNRISE, young American tourist Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and French student Celine (Julie Delpy) meet on the train from Budapest and spend a day and a night talking and walking around Vienna -- and falling in love. Jesse must catch a plane in the morning. Will they ever see each other again? Richard Linklater’s poetic, poignant romance remains one of the most touching films of the 1990s. It kicks off his acclaimed "Before" trilogy on Friday and Sunday. Watch the trailer for BEFORE SUNRISE here.

Linklater's BEFORE SUNSET takes place nine years after "Before Sunrise"
Richard Linklater's 2004 BEFORE SUNSET is set nine years after the memorable night in Vienna detailed in BEFORE SUNRISE (see previous blurb). One-night lovers Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy), now grown-up and gainfully employed, meet by chance in Paris and spend a few hours together before he needs to catch another plane. See Part 2 of Linklater's "Before" trilogy on Friday or Sunday.

Acclaimed BEFORE MIDNIGHT concludes Richard Linklater's "Before" trilogy
Richard Linklater's BEFORE MIDNIGHT is the concluding movie in his "Before" trilogy. It is also 2013's most acclaimed film. BEFORE MIDNIGHT picks up the story of Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) nine years after the events of BEFORE SUNSET, 18 years after they first met on that Vienna-bound train. (See previous two blurbs.) Now in Greece, Jesse and Celine are older and (maybe) wiser, but still possess the ability to transfix and entertain an audience by doing little more than walking and talking. The Boston Globe observes: "If the first two films belong with the greatest (if talkiest) movie romances of all time, the new film is richer, riskier, and more bleakly perceptive about what it takes for love to endure (or not) over the long haul." See BEFORE MIDNIGHT on Saturday or Sunday. Or see all three films, in the proper order, on Sunday.

Four people go on vacation, only three return in WISH YOU WERE HERE
Joel Edgerton (THE GREAT GATSBY) stars in the acclaimed 2012 Australian thriller WISH YOU WERE HERE, about two Aussie couples who go on a carefree South Asian holiday in Cambodia from which only three of the vacationers return. The truth behind the mysterious disappearance of the fourth threatens the stability and marriage of the other couple. Variety says that WISH YOU WERE HERE "consistently entertains by throwing the kinds of curves one should see coming but doesn't.” We hope you are here on Thursday or Saturday to see this movie's exclusive Cleveland theatrical premiere.

Miyazaki series continues with eco-thriller NAUSICAA OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND
The 1984 Japanese animated feature NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND was Hayao Miyazaki’s breakthrough movie -- an epic post-apocalyptic fantasy set in the harmonious Valley of the Wind, whose ecosystem survived the devastating “Seven Days of Fire” but is now threatened again. It falls to young princess Nausicaä to stop two warring clans and vanquish the giant insects in the surrounding toxic jungle. The 35mm print we will show on Thursday and Saturday has English voices by Shia LaBeouf, Edward James Olmos, Patrick Stewart, and Uma Thurman, among others. Print this email and present it at the box office and see NAUSICAA for only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out)
