THE LIVES OF OTHERS is tense tale of East German secret police
Winner of the 2006 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (as well as the European Film Award for best picture), the German movie THE LIVES OF OTHERS is a gripping romantic thriller about a Stasi agent in 1984 East Germany who becomes personally involved in the lives of two people on whom he spies: a playwright and the author's actress lover. See this much-loved modern classic from 35mm on Thursday or Saturday. Here's the trailer.

TO THE WONDER is the gorgeous, lyrical new film from director of TREE OF LIFE
TO THE WONDER is the exquisite new film from Terrence Malick, the director of DAYS OF HEAVEN, THE THIN RED LINE, and TREE OF LIFE. The movie employs sublime visuals, snippets of classical music, and snatches of dialogue and voiceover narration to tell a skeletal story of a young French woman (Olga Kurylenko) and an American man (Ben Affleck) living happily in France but who grow apart when they relocate to America. The actors and camera never stop moving in this lyrical work that is part paean, part prayer. As in his other movies, Malick seeks the eternal in the evanescent. Javier Bardem and Rachel McAdams co-star in this love story that will be shown from 35mm for the first time in Cleveland on Friday and Saturday. Watch the beautiful trailer here.

New silent film BLANCANIEVES transposes "Snow White" to 1920s Spain
The story of Snow White is transposed to the world of 1920s Spanish bullfighting in BLANCANIEVES, a new b&w silent feature that was Spain’s submission for last year’s Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. It’s a dazzling, magical movie in which the daughter of a master matador escapes her cruel and conniving stepmother and joins a traveling troupe of tiny toreadors. As the evil stepmother, Maribel Verdú (Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN) pulls out all the stops. (She won the Goya Award, Spain’s Oscar, for Best Actress.) Pablo Berger's movie won nine other Goyas, including Best Film and Best Original Score. Don't miss it Friday or Saturday.

Young American has fling with Parisian prostitute in stylish SIMON KILLER
SIMON KILLER, the unflinching, coolly elegant new thriller from Antonio Campos (AFTERSCHOOL), is a descent into Gaspar Noé territory. Brady Corbet (MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE, FUNNY GAMES) plays a heartbroken, unhinged young man who flees to Paris and begins an ill-fated relationship with a prostitute. Critic Bill Goodyear calls this film "a beautifully made look at ugliness and brutality, the kind of oxymoronic exercise that fascinates some and repels others.” No one under 18 will be admitted to this movie that shows on Thursday and Friday. Print this email and present it at the box office and see SIMON KILLER for only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Here's the trailer.

Cinematheque volunteer Christina Gaston to be remembered before free screening of THE AMERICAN ASTRONAUT
On Monday night at 7:00 pm we remember musician, arts lover, and Cinematheque volunteer Christina Gaston, who passed away suddenly in April at age 34, with a free screening of one of Christina's favorite films, THE AMERICAN ASTRONAUT. This loony, low-tech 2001 sci-fi Western/musical tells of an interplanetary trader from Earth (writer-director-singer Cory McAbee) who encounters an old nemesis while traversing the solar system—rendered here as a grubby frontier populated by tough guys and other ne’er-do-wells. At 7:00, prior to the screening, friends will speak about Christina. This event is co-sponsored by Column & Stripe: The New Friends of the Cleveland Museum of Art. The film is presented courtesy of Cory McAbee and Pablo Kjolseth.
