6/27-29: Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes, the final Keaton/Etaix films & more!

06/26/13  |  Posted by Cinematheque  |  Posted in Cinematheque

POST TENEBRAS LUX (AFTER DARKNESS, LIGHT) is the new film from Mexico’s most provocative auteur Carlos Reygadas (SILENT NIGHT, BATTLE IN HEAVEN). It is a semi-autobiographical, Tarkovskian work full of musings and memories, fears, fantasies, and forebodings. The story centers on an affluent man who has moved his wife and two young children to a new house in the remote Mexican countryside. There he struggles with demons and dualities: tranquility and violence, privilege and poverty, guilt and salvation. Reygadas’ meanings will be debated for years, but there’s no denying his astonishing command of cinema. (He won the Best Director award at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival for this work.) This movie is essential viewing for true cinephiles, so its exclusive Cleveland-area premiere on Friday and Saturday should not be missed. No one under 18 admitted! Watch the trailer here.

Hitchcock classic THE LADY VANISHES reappears for its 75th anniversary
In Alfred Hitchcock’s celebrated 1938 comic thriller THE LADY VANISHES, a little old lady on board a train suddenly disappears—though fellow passengers deny ever having seen her! A young musicologist volunteers to help the lady's beautiful young traveling companion solve the mystery. Margaret Lockwood and Michael Redgrave star. Leonard Maltin calls it "Hitchcock at his best.” See it in 35mm on Friday or Saturday.

Louis Malle's potent THE FIRE WITHIN marks its 50th anniversary
The 1963 French drama THE FIRE WITHIN is perhaps the greatest of Louis Malle’s early films. It focuses on an alcoholic writer (Maurice Ronet) who leaves a clinic determined to kill himself. But he spends 24 hours visiting friends in the hope that they might give him a reason to live. Jeanne Moreau and Alexandra Stewart co-star. The music is by Erik Satie. Don't miss it in 35mm on Saturday night.

Controversial doc LAND OF MILK AND HONEY concludes Pierre Étaix series
Pierre Étaix's fifth (and final) feature LAND OF MILK AND HONEY(1971) marked a striking (and biting) change of pace for France's mild-mannered, Keaton-like comedian. The movie is a documentary that captures complacent French people on holiday at the beach and in the countryside three months after the explosive events of May 1968. The vacationers spout off on a variety of topics—from eroticism and violence to marriage and even architecture. The public did not appreciate this unflattering look in the mirror and the movie essentially ended Étaix's filmmaking career. See it in a restored 35mm color print on Thursday night. Print this email and present it at the box office and pay only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out)

Three more two-reel masterpieces conclude monthlong Buster Keaton series
The last three of the 19 inventive short comedies that Buster Keaton starred in and directed before turning his attention to features will be shown on Thursday and Friday in BUSTER KEATON’S TWO-REEL COMEDIES, PROGRAM 5. Included are 35mm print of "The Electric House" (1922), in which botanist Buster tries to wire his domicile; "The Ballonatic" (1923), in which Buster accidentally takes off in a hot-air balloon and has a series of fantastic adventures; and "The Love Nest" (1923), in which Buster joins the crew of a whaling ship run by a vicious captain. All are silent with music tracks.
