5/9-12: Moonrise Kingdom, Amour, Diana Vreeland & more!

All-star cast reigns in Wes Anderson's delightful MOONRISE KINGDOM
MOONRISE KINGDOM, the latest movie by Wes Anderson (RUSHMORE, THE ROYAL TENNENBAUMS), was one of the most delightful and touching films of 2012. It's a funny, whimsical, beautifully designed paean to adolescence and young love, further buoyed by the lyrical music of Benjamin Britten (1913-1976). Set on a fictional New England island during the summer of 1965, the film tells of two tweener pen pals—camp cadet Sam and arts-loving Suzy—who make a secret pact to run away together. Their disappearance sends Suzy’s parents (Bill Murray, Frances McDormand), Sam’s scoutmaster (Edward Norton), and the local police chief (Bruce Willis) into a tizzy, and they frantically form a search party. Don't miss it in 35mm on Friday or Sunday.

DIANA VREELEND: THE EYE HAS TO TRAVEL recounts life of fashion legend
For over 50 years Diana Vreeland (1903-1989) was one of the fashion world’s foremost figures. She was fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar, editor-in-chief of Vogue, advisor to Jackie Kennedy, and discoverer of Twiggy and Edie Sedgwick. The new film DIANA VREELAND: THE EYE HAS TO TRAVEL, which we are bringing back as part of Fashion Week Cleveland, recounts her stylish and colorful life with pizzazz. See it Friday night as part of Fashion Week Cleveland!

Michael Haneke's AMOUR was the most honored foreign film of 2012
Michael Haneke's AMOUR was the most acclaimed foreign-language film of 2012! (It won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, the European Film Award for Best Film, and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.) Veteran French actors Jean-Louis Trintignant (MY NIGHT AT MAUD'S, THE CONFORMIST), Emmanuelle Riva (HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR), and Isabelle Huppert (THE PIANO TEACHER) star in this unflinching, moving account of an elderly man’s devotion to his longtime wife after she suffers a debilitating stroke. From the director of THE WHITE RIBBON, CACHE, and THE SEVENTH CONTINENT (which shows May 16 & 17). Don't miss it on Saturday or Sunday.

Vincent Cassel battles the Devil in gripping Gothic drama THE MONK
Vincent Cassel (BLACK SWAN, TRANCE) stars in THE MONK, a gripping Gothic drama set in 17th-century Spain during the time of the Inquisition. Dominik Moll's 2011 French/Spanish movie tells of a charismatic, virtuous friar who succumbs to Satan (in the form of a mysterious masked disciple who seeks to join his order). Shown at the 2012 Cleveland Int’l Film Festival, THE MONK returns to Cleveland on Saturday and Sunday. Print this email and present it at the boxoffice and see THE MONK for only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week!(Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Here's the trailer.

Ozu series continues with 1952's THE FLAVOR OF GREEN TEA OVER RICE
Yasujiro Ozu's 1952 movie THE FLAVOR OF GREEN TEA OVER RICE is “one of his brightest and funniest films,” according to The Holt Foreign Film Guide. In it, a middle-class, middle-aged man of simple tastes and his snobbish wife try to reinvigorate their stale, childless marriage. The Time Out Film Guide calls it "very funny and very moving.” See it in 35mm on Thursday or Saturday.

FOUR FILMS BY DONALD RICHIE pay tribute to late, great film scholar
Donald Richie, who was born in Lima, Ohio in 1924 and died in Tokyo in February, did more than anybody to introduce Japanese cinema to the West. A revered film scholar who penned such groundbreaking works as The Japanese Film (1959), The Films of Akira Kurosawa (1965), and Ozu: His Life and Films (1974), Richie was also an occasional maker of his own experimental short films. Though they are little known and rarely shown, this Thursday night, as a tribute to their late creator, we will screen FOUR FILMS BY DONALD RICHIE:Wargames (1962), Life (1965), Dead Youth (1967), and Five Filosophical Fables (1967). All made in Japan, they tend to be morality tales depicting rituals of life, love, sex, and death. No one under 18 will be admitted!
