Aussie schoolgirls mysteriously vanish in Peter Weir's PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK
PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK, the 1975 Australian movie that made Peter Weir’s reputation in the U.S., is a lush period piece that tells an eerie, confounding story—about how three Aussie schoolgirls and a teacher from privileged Appleyard College vanished one sunny day in 1900 while visiting an Aboriginal holy place. The Rough Guide to Film calls it "a hypnotic, tantalizingly mysterious film.” See it in a 35mm color print on Friday or Saturday. Wordless SAMSARA wows on the big screen
Ron Fricke, the cinematographer of KOYAANISQATSI and director of BARAKA, returns with SAMSARA, another visually stunning, non-verbal movie filmed in remote, exotic locations around the world. Shot on large-format 70mm film over a period of five years in 25 countries and five continents, SAMSARA (the title is a Sanskrit word that means “the ever-turning wheel of life”) captures sacred rituals, natural wonders, huge industrial complexes, and epic disaster areas in a series of eye-popping, mind-blowing images married to music. An audience hit in December, it returns to our big screen on Friday and Saturday. Here's the trailer.
Cinematheque partners with film festival on Ulrich Seidl's PARADISE: LOVE
The films of Austria’s Ulrich Seidl are not for everybody, but he has been a regular presence on the Cinematheque screen ever since we debuted his 2001 feature DOG DAYS over ten years ago. Seidl’s newest, and perhaps most ambitious, undertaking is the three-part “Paradise” trilogy, which receives its American premiere at this year’s 37th Cleveland Int’l Film Festival (April 3-14 at Tower City Cinemas). Given our long history with the director, the Cinematheque will partner with the festival on the presentation of the first of the three films, PARADISE: LOVE, a frank, shocking tale of sex tourism in Kenya. It shows downtown on Sunday and Tuesday, April 9. Seidl, whose documentary-fiction hybrids have a formal beauty at odds with his often ugly subjects (think Diane Arbus), has long been drawn to freaks, misfits, and monsters, and to the sordid and sensational sides of “civilized” society. PARADISE: LOVE is a post-colonialist parable in which a lonely, 50-year-old Austrian matron journeys to Africa for love—but finds only sex and disappointment among the willing, hard-bodied locals. It’s for tolerant adults only. Seidl’s trilogy concludes with PARADISE: FAITH and PARADISE: HOPE, which also show on Sunday as well as later in the festival.
