Author and film scholar J. M. Tyree introduces Maysles brothers' SALESMAN and Coen brothers' THE BIG LEBOWSKI
J. M. (Josh) Tyree is a film scholar, college professor, and former Cleveland resident (and one-time Cinematheque volunteer) who writes regularly for Film Quarterly and Sight & Sound. He has penned two of the books in the BFI (British Film Institute) Film Classics series—one on the Maysles brothers’ 1968 documentary SALESMAN and one on the Coen brothers’ 1998 cult film THE BIG LEBOWSKI. On Saturday night Tyree will appear in person to introduce screenings of both movies and answer questions and sell and sign books. SALESMAN, showing at 5:30 pm, is a direct cinema classic that follows four different door-to-door Bible salesmen (nicknamed “The Rabbit,” “The Badger,” “The Bull,” and “The Gipper”) as they call on potential buyers in Boston and Miami. The movie was selected for the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry in 1992, and right after our screening the 35mm print goes to this year's TCM Classic Film Festival in L.A. Watch the film's original trailer here.

The Coen brothers' THE BIG LEBOWSKI (1998) stars Jeff Bridges as “the Dude,” a dopehead, slacker, and bowler who accidentally becomes embroiled in a high-stakes kidnapping scheme. This clever Raymond Chandler knock-off also stars John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julianne Moore, and John Turturro. See it in 35mm on Saturday at 8:30 pm or Sunday at 8:45 pm. But Josh Tyree will appear with the movie only on Saturday.

Man accidentally hears about imminent nuclear war in terrific MIRACLE MILE
Regarded by many as one of the best “end of the world” films, Steve De Jarnatt's scary, sobering 1988 chiller MIRACLE MILE stars Anthony Edwards as a young Angelino who learns, by sheer chance, that nuclear Armageddon will commence in about an hour. He frantically searches for his new girlfriend (Mare Winningham) so they can flee L.A. together. See it in 35mm on Thursday or Friday. Here's the original trailer.

Harmony ("Spring Breakers") Korine directs all-star cast in MISTER LONELY
Harmony Korine’s strange, one-of-a-kind 2007 feature MISTER LONELY is a funny, offbeat, “neverland” fable about a lonely Michael Jackson impersonator (Diego Luna) who is invited by a Marilyn Monroe look-alike (Samantha Morton) to live at a Scottish commune populated by other pop culture impersonators (including Denis Lavant as Charlie Chaplin). A bizarre parallel story stars Werner Herzog as a Latin American priest and airplane pilot who transports a group of parachuting, flying nuns. See it in 35mm on Friday or Sunday.

TUVALU opens Denis Lavant series on Thursday; replaces "Holy Motors"
Veit Helmer's 1999 German film TUVALU is a whimsical, virtually wordless comedy-fantasy that stars the amazing Denis Lavant as a hardworking attendant at a decaying European bathhouse. Lavant's character uses his wits to keep the baths running, the blind owner and nutty patrons happy, and the wrecking ball at bay. This delightful crowd-pleaser will replace HOLY MOTORS on Thursday night. Print this email and present it at the box office and see TUVALU on 4/18 for only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) TUVALU will also show next weekend.

1981 Moroccan music film TRANCES receives rare screening in restored print
Founded in 2007 by Martin Scorsese and other filmmakers, the World Cinema Foundation (WCF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and restoring neglected films from around the world—specifically films from countries lacking the financial and technical ability to do so. So far the WCF has restored 17 masterpieces from around the world; Ahmed El Maanouni'S 1981 Moroccan music film TRANCES was the first of them. (It’s also the first WCF restoration to show in Cleveland.) TRANCES is a documentary on Nass El Ghiwane (People of Song), a popular music ensemble that took Northern Africa by storm in the 1970s. (You can hear them on the soundtrack of Scorsese's THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST.) Interviews and concert footage shed light on the group and their efforts to blend traditional trance music with contemporary electronica. The Holt Foreign Film Guide calls TRANCES "an unusual musical documentary to Western eyes and ears…Shows not only a Third World Beatlemania, but analyzes the group’s appeal and sets them in a historical and cultural context.” See it in a 35mm print from Europe on Sunday afternoon. Special admission is $12; Cinematheque members and those with CIA I.D. $9; age 25 & under $8; no passes, twofers, or radio winners. Print courtesy Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna.
