American seizes presidency of Nicaragua in Alex Cox's strange but true historical drama WALKER
Alex Cox's 1987 movie WALKER was originally a critical and box office disaster. Now this film from the director of REPO MAN and SID AND NANCY has many fans. It tells the incredible but little-known true story of William Walker (Ed Harris), an American adventurer who invaded Nicaragua with a mercenary army in the 1850s and set himself up as the country’s president—all to secure an overland shipping route between the Atlantic and the Pacific for his rich sponsor, Cornelius Vanderbilt (Peter Boyle). Oscar winner Marlee Matlin co-stars in this movie that has a screenplay by Rudy Wurlitzer and music by Joe Strummer. Catch its long, long overdue Cleveland theatrical premiere on Friday or Saturday. Here's the original trailer.

Toshiro Mifune stars in Akira Kurosawa's tense kidnap drama HIGH AND LOW
Toshiro Mifune stars in Akira Kurosawa’s riveting 1963 Japanese thrillerHIGH AND LOW, based on an Ed McBain novel. Mifune plays a wealthy shoe manufacturer who faces a moral dilemma when his chauffeur’s son is mistaken for his own child and is abducted and held for a ruinous ransom. Should he pay it and save his employee’s kid? This thrilling crime melodrama plumbs Dostoyevskian depths and charts the gulf between the haves and the have nots. Tatsuya Nakadai and Takashi Shimura co-star. See it in a 35mm scope print on Friday or Saturday. Print this email and present it at the box office and pay only $7 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Watch the film's original American trailer here.
