CHICKEN WITH PLUMS is latest film from the author & director of "Persepolis"
Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud's follow-up to their 2007 animated hit PERSEPOLIS is CHICKEN WITH PLUMS, a visually stunning and imaginative live-action adaptation of another Satrapi graphic novel. The film is set in late-1950s Iran, where an accomplished musician (Mathieu Amalric) loses the will to live when his wife breaks his beloved violin. Waiting to die, he flashes back to his young love for a woman who married another, and to other funny, sad, surreal episodes in his alternately passionate and pathetic life. Maria de Medeiros, Chiara Mastroianni, and Isabella Rossellini co-star. See it in a 35mm color & scope print on Thursday or Sunday.

Ivan Dixon stars in landmark 1964 racial drama NOTHING BUT A MAN
Ivan Dixon ("Hogan’s Heroes") and Abbey Lincoln star in Michael Roemer's landmark 1964 racial drama NOTHING BUT A MAN, shot during the summer (1963) that also witnessed the March on Washington and Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Set in Alabama, the movie focuses on a black laborer who marries the educated daughter of a preacher, then struggles (against racism and other realities) to build a dignified life for her. Critic Amy Taubin calls NOTHING BUT A MAN “one of the great American independent films and one of the great films about how racism defines African American masculinity.” See a new 35mm restoration of this classic on Friday or Saturday.

Unique 1947 film noir LADY IN THE LAKE is told entirely from Philip Marlowe's p.o.v.
Robert Montgomery plays private eye Philip Marlowe in the 1947 film noir LADY IN THE LAKE, co-starring Audrey Totter. This unique Raymond Chandler adaptation is one of the great one-of-a-kind movies: all of the action is seen from Marlowe’s first-person point of view. (The star is seen only in mirror reflections.) The plot finds Marlowe hired to locate the estranged wife of the publisher of a crime magazine. Pretty soon he is embroiled in a complicated murder case. The film will be introduced on Saturday and Sunday by Joe Valencic, an Audrey Totter expert. Here's the original trailer.

Girl discovers her future in lovely Japanese animated feature WHISPER OF THE HEART
The 1995 Japanese animated feature WHISPER OF THE HEART was co-written by Hayao Miyazaki, who also directed some of the fantasy scenes. It was the only feature by Yoshifumi Kondô, a promising Studio Ghibli animator who died at age 47. The movie tells of a well-read teenage girl who discovers that all the books she checks out from the library have previously been borrowed by another individual. So she sets out to find this person, thus setting off on a singular journey that will determine her future life and career. The Time Out Film Guide calls WHISPER OF THE HEART “an ineffably lovely animated ode to young love, creativity and the struggles of self-determination.” See it in a 35mm subtitled print on Saturday or Sunday. Print this email and present it at the box office and pay only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member); it's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out)

Franco Nero stars in Sergio Corbucci's 1968 spaghetti western THE MERCENARY
THE MERCENARY is a 1968 spaghetti Western from Sergio Corbucci, the director of THE GREAT SILENCE and DJANGO. Franco Nero, who played Django, stars as a Polish hired gun who escorts a silver shipment to Texas. There a Mexican peasant and freedom fighter (Tony Musante) convinces him to fight against the evil mine owner and his ruthless henchmen (led by sadistic dandy Jack Palance). The great Ennio Morricone did the music to this film that will be shown in a new 35mm color print on Thursday or Friday. Watch the original trailer here.
