Winners for the iPad Animation Contest
04/24/12 | Posted by Scott Ligon | Posted in Digital Canvas - News
The results are in for our iPad animation contest! The winner for "best animation" goes to Geemay Chia. Geemay will receive a $50 iTunes Card redeem code in her email. The winner for "best class animation" is Kidist Getachew's Wednesday Digital Synthesis Class. EVERYONE in the class gets a $15 iTunes card redeem code sent to them by email. Virtually every Foundation student participated in the iPad animation contest through their Digital Synthesis Class. All students and classes were presented to the judges anonymously. Our judges, Professors Richard Fiorelli, Barbara Chira and Jimmy Kuehnle, heroically reviewed well over one hundred animations in order to select the winners. Professor Fiorelli made visual notes for every single video, essentially recreating drawings from each of them, in order to make an informed decision. In this assignment, each student made a 30 second black and white animated video using frame-by-frame drawing. They began and ended the video with a straight horizontal line down the middle of the frame. The videos from each Digital Synthesis class were edited together into a single longer video. Since they all start and end with a straight horizontal line down the middle, the videos flowed seamlessly from one to the next. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to everyone that participated. Despite using a buggy Animation App (which will not be used in the future!) students produced some awesome work. See below. Thanks Brynn. We used Flip Boom Draw and several students had the app crash while working. We currently recommend Animation Creator HD for the iPad. I thought the students did a great job despite the challenges.

This was a pretty brilliant contest and the best of compilation really showcases all the varied perspectives from each artist. Sounds like the judges did their due diligence in making a selection too! Can I ask what "buggy" animation app was used?
