Christian Bale stars in Chinese historical epic THE FLOWERS OF WAR. Christian Bale teams up with Zhang Yimou, the director of RAISE THE RED LANTERN and HERO, in THE FLOWERS OF WAR . This historical epic was China's official entry for this year's Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, as well as a Golden Globe nominee for Best Foreign Language Film. Set in 1937 Nanjing (Nanking) during the Second Sino-Japanese War, the film tells of an American mortician (Bale) who poses as a priest in order to protect young Chinese prostitutes who have sought shelter in a convent during the horrific Rape of Nanjing. Boxoffice Magazine calls it "an inspiring, stirring and unforgettable human drama?Highly recommended." See it in an English-subtitled, 35mm color & scope print on Saturday or Sunday. Antonioni's RED DESERT: alienation and pollution never looked so good! Michelangelo Antonioni's 1964 film RED DESERT was the Italian maestro's first color feature, and it is gorgeous to behold. This is not surprising since Antonioni painted and dyed grass, trees, sand, buildings, fruit, and hair to enhance the film's mood and complement his characters' neuroses. The movie is a tone poem set in a soulless and stifling industrial landscape, and follows an electrical engineer's wife (Monica Vitti) who has an affair with her husband's best friend (Richard Harris) in order to maintain some kind of human contact. The Time Out Film Guide calls RED DESERT "perhaps the most extraordinary and riveting film of Antonioni's entire career? An aesthetic feast." See it in a new 35mm print on Saturday or Sunday. Here's the original trailer. Original Swedish film version of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO returns Now that we've seen the David Fincher/Rooney Mara/Daniel Craig THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO , let's take another look at Niels Arden Oplev's 2009 Swedish version of the first part of Stieg Larsson's "Millennium" trilogy, a huge international hit. (It was withdrawn from U.S. theatres for the past three months.) In this movie, Noomi Rapace plays tough, embittered computer hacker Lisbeth Salander, and Michael Nyqvist the discredited journalist Mikael Blomkvist. The two of them join forces to solve a decades-old mystery: the disappearance of a rich young woman. No one under 18 will be admitted to this movie that shows on Thursday and Friday. ?vankmajer's CONSPIRATORS OF PLEASURE: whatever turns you sickos on CONSPIRATORS OF PLEASURE (1997), the third feature by the great Czech animator and surrealist Jan ?vankmajer, owes a debt to Sigmund Freud, Max Ernst, Luis Buñuel, and the Marquis de Sade. It's a virtually wordless portrait of six ordinary but lonely people with outlandish sexual fetishes. Far removed from garden-variety whips and chains, these bizarre turn-ons involve everything from bread balls, nails, and rolling pins to a chicken carcass and toe-sucking fish! CONSPIRATORS OF PLEASURE is hilarious, subversive, disgusting, and disturbing. According to The Village Voice, it "rivals (Cronenberg's) CRASH for kinkiness." No one under 18 will be admitted when it shows Friday and Saturday. Robert Bresson re-creates THE TRIAL OF JOAN OF ARC Robert Bresson's 1962 French film THE TRIAL OF JOAN OF ARC is based on excerpts from the official trial transcript. The movie attempts to humanize the saint whom Bresson once called "the most extraordinary person who ever lived." See it in a rare 35mm print on Sunday night only. Watch the original trailer here . Cleveland Int'l Film Festival film MICHAEL to fill "To Be Announced" slot on April 27 Markus Schleinzer's 2011 Austrian film MICHAEL , recently featured at the 36th Cleveland Int'l Film Festival, will fill the TBA slot on Friday, April 27 at 9:20 pm. Acclaimed at the Cannes and Toronto Film Festivals as well, MICHAEL is a dispassionate account of a closet pedophile. This movie is for adults only. THIS WEEKEND The Original Swedish Version!
