Adobe Photoshop Touch

03/26/12  |  Posted by Maria Rouzzo  |  Posted in Digital Canvas - Apps & Accessories

Adobe Photoshop Touch Available for $9.99 in iTunes, Adobe Photoshop Touch allows users with the iPad 2 (updated to iOS 5) to utilize traditional Photoshop features such as layers, curves, and selection tools in addition to creative filters to create and share images at a maximum resolution of 1600x1600 pixels. The iPad camera fill feature takes photos and imports them directly to a new image layer, and images can also be acquired through the iPad's Camera Roll or the integrated Google Image Search. Layered files can be uploaded to the Adobe Creative Cloud in order to continue editing on a computer with Adobe Photoshop CS5. An inspirational gallery is available for creative examples and a variety of step-by-step tutorials are offered. Take a look below for further examples of the Adobe Photoshop Touch tutorials and features. Here is the basic Photoshop Touch layout: A map of the side navigation tools: A map of the top navigation tools:   Effects and Adjustment Options: Tutorials: Toggle back and forth between steps with the forward and backward arrows, and tap the lightbulb icon for tips on the location and function of tools.

  • Add dramatic flare: "Add a sense of motion and mystery to your photo by isolating your subject and using a motion blur on your background."
  • Paint with effects: "Make the subject of your photo really stand out by painting your image with special effects."
  • Replace colors: "Change the color of an object while retaining its texture, shading, and detail.
  • Create camera layers: "Use your tablet's camera while working in Photoshop Touch. Add a face to this pirate portrait in a few easy steps."
  • Make a pencil sketch: "Turn your color photograph into a crosshatched pencil sketch in a few easy steps."
  • Create photo frames: "Create a quick frame or border for your photo. Then use the layer blend modes to create different transparent frame effects."
  • Add a tattoo: "Add a tattoo by transforming and applying a simple graphic to any area of skin in a photo."
  • Make a painting: "Experiment with different painting styles. Use a variety of brush stroke effects to create different looks."
  • Add people to images: "Combine separate photos of people to make it appear as though they were together when the image was shot."
  • Drop Shadow Text: "Learn to quickly create some text, give it a custom color, rotate or resize it, and then add a drop shadow to add dimension."
  • Antique photos: "Apply a sepia tone and a few other effects to make your photo look like it was created 100 years ago."
  • Clean up a background: "Remove unwanted background clutter while protecting the parts of your image that you want to keep."
  • Smooth image blending: "Combine two photos seamlessly using a gradient within the Add Fade feature. You control where the fade starts and stops."
However, there are a few things that aren't so great about the app. The image resolution (1600X1600px, about 5in x 5in), like most apps, doesn't allow for print quality images. The navigation is also rather confusing, with unlabeled icons and a very different setup than traditional Photoshop. Text layers immediately flatten after the first edit, so you can't make later adjustments. Overall, Adobe Photoshop Touch is a comprehensive photo editing application that has infinite compositing possibilities for only $9.99. Just as learning any of the Adobe Photoshop programs, practice makes perfect. I wouldn't recommend this application for those who aren't familiar with Photoshop and for those who are impatient. Though it takes some getting used to, Photoshop Touch is excellent for drafting concepts, starting projects to transfer through the Creative Cloud, and quickly editing photos.
