Places To Go, Things To See

02/17/12  |  Posted by Tami Liss  |  Posted in Student Blogger

Part of my Graduation "bucket-list" is to attend as many CIA events this year as possible. Looking back, I regret not going to more while still a Freshman or Sophomore. But the closer you get to commencement, the need to exploit these resources becomes increasingly urgent. I consider things like Carnivale, Laser Tag, and Cedar Point - gallery exhibitions, Lunch on Fridays, presentations, and open figure drawing wrapped in my enrollment (and tuition) as much as anything else. It's hard to say no when "free" opportunities are right in front of you, though we know we all do for one reason or another. So I'm trying to push myself more and more to make the most of these things (whether I have the time or not), even if it means stepping out of my comfort (or lethargy) zone or, more difficultly, stepping into something crowded with people.   My favorite events from this year so far have been the Halloween Party (always), Cedar Point (their Halloween setup is FANTASTIC), Monsters Hockey (sadly, no major wipeouts or scuffles), Carnivale (they really pulled out all the stops this year), and Whirly Ball (polo/lacrosse/basketball with bumper cars, which is at once ridiculous, intense, and super fun). Speaking of Carnivale, you can check out your photobooth shots or satisfy voyeuristic curiosity at our Shutterbooth.com gallery. The sensational music was spun by local DJ Zoë Renee Jackson aka Saint of Eclectic Circus.   The Student Independent Exhibition reception is TODAY (Fri Feb 7) 6-9pm in Reinberger Gallery (I'm told there will be cake), and the Brite Winter Festival tomorrow (Sat Feb 18) 5-10pm at Bridge Avenue and W. 26 Street in Ohio City. Next week, look for promotional material on student animation show 360? of Sight and Sound at the Natural History Museum's Planetarium (IMAX, man!), in collaboration with the Cleveland Institute of Music. Premiere is Thurs Feb 23 with two public screenings: 8:15pm and 9pm. Look for info on student price tickets.   Lastly, join me in giving a hand to some of the groups that make these events possible (they do all this for you, folks):

  • CAB (Campus Activities Board)
  • SLC (Student Leadership Council)
  • SLH (Student Life & Housing)
  • Your resident faculty+staff and fellow students
