Lars von Trier's shattering MELANCHOLIA is one of the year's must-see movies! Named Best Film of 2011 by both the National Society of Film Critics and the European Film Awards, Lars von Trier's MELANCHOLIA is a visually stunning drama with an all-star cast (Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg,Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, Stellan Skarsgård, John Hurt, et al.). Set at a lavish estate, the film follows two sisters at a disaster-laden, dusk-to-dawn wedding reception-and later at the mansion as a rogue planet heads toward earth on a possible collision course. Catch the East Side premiere of this essential new movie in a 35mm color & scope print on Sunday or Monday.
THE BLACK POWER MIXTAPE 1967-1975 revisits Black Power movement Göran Hugo Olsson's THE BLACK POWER MIXTAPE 1967-1975 is a recently unearthed treasure trove of 16mm documentary footage shot by Swedish journalists during the 1960s and 1970s. It provides a fascinating overview of the Black Power movement. Found languishing in the basement of Swedish Television, this footage has been assembled into a mosaic of images, music, and narration, and includes candid historical interviews with such activists as Stokely Carmichael, Bobby Seale, Angela Davis, and Eldridge Cleaver. Time Out New York calls the film "essential viewing for anyone concerned with our nation's history-and its present." Catch its exclusive Cleveland theatrical premiere engagement Thursday or Friday. Break dancers to perform live before Friday night showing of WILD STYLE Charlie Ahearn's 1983 classic WILD STYLE was the first--and remains the greatest--hip-hop movie ever made. The film captures the South Bronx beginnings of the cultural explosion heard 'round the world, with its DJ's, MC's, graffiti artists, break dancers, and rappers. Celebrated subway scribbler Lee Quiñones stars as a fictional version of himself, but the movie's main draw is its music, which features performances by Fab 5 Freddy, Grandmaster Flash, Lady Pink, the Cold Crush Brothers, and others. See it in a new 35mm color print on Friday night at 7:30 pm. Before the movie, at 7:00, Dee Jay Doc will host a b-boy/b-girl jam and special performance by the students from the N2N Neighborhood Hip-hop Camp on the Aitken Auditorium stage. So arrive early! (Above photo by Marty Cooper.) CHARLOTTE RAMPLING: THE LOOK profiles aloof, enigmatic actress Charlotte Rampling is the aloof, enigmatic star of THE NIGHT PORTER, THE SWIMMING POOL, THE MILL AND THE CROSS, MELANCHOLIA, and many other movies. In Angelina Maccarone's new documentary CHARLOTTE RAMPLING: THE LOOK , the now 65-year-old actress talks with friends and artistic collaborators about topics ranging from age and beauty to demons, desire, and death. Breaking up the conversations are clips from Rampling's notable films: Woody Allen's STARDUST MEMORIES, Laurent Cantet's HEADING SOUTH, François Ozon's UNDER THE SAND, Sidney Lumet's THE VERDICT, and others. Take a look at this new movie on Thursday or Saturday. Keira Knightley and Colin Farrell star in thriller LONDON BOULEVARD Colin Farrell and Keira Knightley star in LONDON BOULEVARD , the first film directed by William Monahan, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Martin Scorsese's THE DEPARTED. The movie is a Brit noir about an ex-con (Farrell), determined to go straight, who takes a job as bodyguard to a reclusive movie star (Knightley). Unfortunately, his new position attracts the unwanted attention of a local crime boss (Ray Winstone) who threatens his rehabilitation. David Thewlis (NAKED) co-stars in this film that plays on Saturday and Sunday. Eisenstein's electrifying OCTOBER chronicles ten days that shook the world Statues are razed, palaces stormed, and governments toppled in Eisenstein's 1927 masterpiece OCTOBER (a.k.a. TEN DAYS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD), his tenth-anniversary tribute to the 1917 Russian Revolution. This dazzling, innovative silent film (Eisenstein's follow-up to his landmark BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN) ran into censorship problems in the USSR (references to Trotsky had to be removed) and elicited the first charges of elitist "formalism" against the filmmaker. Don't miss it Saturday or Sunday in a 35mm print from England with a Dmitri Shostakovich score.
