Blog . Dec. 1-4: Gainsbourg, The Mill And The Cross & More!
Bohemian life of 1960s-70s French singer-songwriter is celebrated in GAINSBOURG The life of French singer/songwriter Serge Gainsbourg (1928-1991), a Jew who survived Nazi-occupied WWII Paris to become a pop sensation during the 1960s and 1970s, is re-created in GAINSBOURG: A HEROIC LIFE , a new French biopic. Gainsbourg (played by Eric Elmosnino, who won the César Award for his portrayal) was an iconic bohemian artist/poet and an incorrigible ladies' man. His two most famous lovers, Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin, are played in the movie by Laetitia Casta (above) and Lucy Gordon. (Gordon committed suicide in 2009 at age 28, before Gainsbourg was released.) First-time filmmaker Joann Sfar adapted his own graphic novel. Variety calls the movie "a feast of memorable chansons and an almost endless parade of drop-dead-gorgeous muses." See it Friday or Saturday when it premieres exclusively at the Cinematheque. Presentation of this film supported by a generous grant from Maison Française de Cleveland. Bruegel painting comes to life in unique, dazzling THE MILL AND THE CROSS Did you ever wonder what it would be like to step into a great painting? The unique and highly acclaimed new film THE MILL AND THE CROSS lets you find out. Rutger Hauer, Michael York, and Charlotte Rampling star in Lech Majewski's visually stunning movie, in which Pieter Bruegel the Elder's 1564 masterpiece "The Procession to Calvary" comes to life. The painting depicts Christ being led through a Flemish landscape dominated by a windmill atop a craggy stone tower. He is flanked by Spanish soldiers who occupied Flanders at the time. Bruegel's picture is populated by scores of people (peasants, Spanish redcoats, et al.), but Majewski's film zeroes in on only a handful of them-among them the Virgin Mary and even the artist himself. The New York Times says that "THE MILL AND THE CROSS has ambitions as sweeping as the vast canvas that Bruegel fills. In this lush and hypnotic examination of a painter's work and the times in which he lived, Mr. Majewski presents an extended contemplation of the creative process itself." Check it out on Friday, Saturday,or Sunday. Overlooked THUNDER SOUL returns to seduce more music-loving moviegoers Hardly seen by anyone despite getting rave reviews, the music-filled 2010 documentary THUNDER SOUL tells the story of Houston's Kashmere High School Stage Band, an inner-city, all-black, coed ensemble that transformed itself from a mediocre jazz band in the 1960s to a funk powerhouse in the 1970s. Three decades after the ensemble's 1968-1977 heyday, the group's members dust off their instruments and reunite for a tribute concert to their beloved teacher and director Conrad "Prof" Johnson, now 93. Time Out New York calls THUNDER SOUL "a rousing testament to the singular blessings of music education." The Hollywood Reporter says "a greater argument for music education in our secondary school curriculum can't be made." Groove to it on Thursday or Sunday. Print this post and present it at the box office and see it for only $7 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week!
