RAPT is gripping French kidnap drama. Lucas Belvaux's 2009 French/Belgian film RAPT stars Yvan Attal as a wealthy, powerful French CEO who is abducted one day by masked men and taken away to a secret location. While the police try to locate him, revelations in the media about his heretofore private life of philandering, gambling, etc. make his beautiful wife and children wonder whether his safe return is really worth the hefty ransom the kidnapers are demanding. See this thriller, which is based on a real-life 1978 case, on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday and be rapt yourself. French film tells of another TREE of life Julie Bertuccelli's 2010 French/Australian drama THE TREE was the closing night film at last year's Cannes Film Festival. It stars Charlotte Gainsbourg as a grieving widow living in Australia whose eight-year-old daughter insists that dad's spirit lives on (and communicates with them) in the majestic fig tree that towers over their house. THE TREE is a lyrical, beautiful, deeply moving drama about loss, recovery, and starting over. This English-language film receives its exclusive Cleveland premiere engagement on Saturday and Sunday at the Cinematheque. Detroit-shot MYTH OF THE AMERICAN SLEEPOVER is acclaimed Amerindie film Shot in Detroit (go, Tigers!) and acclaimed at Cannes and SXSW, David Robert Mitchell's THE MYTH OF THE AMERICAN SLEEPOVER is a tender and touching coming-of-age film that follows four high schoolers who cross paths on the last night of summer while cruising for love and adventure in their suburban neighborhood. Straub/Huillet's TOO EARLY, TOO LATE: Egypt years before 2011's Arab Spring In their 1982 French/Egyptian production TOO EARLY, TOO LATE , longtime avant-gardists Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet wed a voiceover reading of two texts-a letter from Friedrich Engels to his disciple Karl Kautsky, and Egyptian historian Mahmoud Hussein's 1969 book Class Conflict in Egypt, 1945-1970-to shots of the places in France and Egypt mentioned in the text. The result is "one of [the duo's] two most beautiful landscape films," according to film critic Jonathan Rosenbaum, who ranks it among his top 100 movies of all time. The work is also a meditation on the relationship between people and the land, on successful and failed revolutions, and on Egyptian society long before this year's Arab Spring. AVANTI! is a little-known 1972 Billy Wilder rom-com that critic Jonathan Rosenbaum has called "the most underrated of all Billy Wilder comedies." (It's on Rosenbaum's list of the top 100 films of all time.) Jack Lemmon plays a stuffy American who travels to Italy when his father dies there in an accident. There he learns that his dad had a mistress (also killed in the crash), and the mistress had a daughter. Lemmon then proceeds to fall for the daughter (Juliet Mills), causing history to repeat itself. See a 35mm print of this rarely revived, beautifully filmed comedy on Saturday or Sunday.
