Oct. 20-23: La Dolce Vita, Stalker, Jane Goodall & More!

Fellini's epic of 1960 decadence LA DOLCE VITA returns in new restored print! Federico Fellini's Italian classic LA DOLCE VITA, one of the landmark movies of the modern era, is now fully restored! This expansive, scandalous survey of "the sweet life" circa 1960 focuses on a tabloid gossip columnist (Marcello Mastroianni) who is both attracted and repelled by the decadence and excesses of Rome's fashionable but soulless jet set. LA DOLCE VITA contains many iconic sequences, including Anita Ekberg in the Trevi Fountain (pictured above). Don't miss the new 35mm scope print we will screen on Friday and Saturday. PUZZLE: why wouldn't a crowd-pleasing movie like this play the multiplex? In Natalia Smirnoff's 2009 Argentine film PUZZLE, a 50-year-old Argentinean homemaker who has spent her life catering to the needs of her husband and children discovers that she has a talent for assembling jigsaw puzzles. This skill, which she nurtures in secret, away from her family, eventually takes her to the national competition. Catch PUZZLE's exclusive Cleveland premiere on Thursday or Saturday. (Patrons attending the Thursday should allow extra time to park because of another event at CIA that night.) Here's the trailer. JANE'S JOURNEY profiles life and work of scientist and humanitarian Jane Goodall Jane Goodall's 75-year journey-from her childhood in England to her groundbreaking animal research with African chimpanzees to her globe-trotting advocacy for peace and the planet-is explored in JANE'S JOURNEY , a wide-ranging portrait of one of Earth's most beloved citizens. Spend a couple of hours with this remarkable woman on Thursday or Sunday. Those coming on Sunday should allow extra time to park; there's another event at CIA that afternoon. Preston Sturges' CHRISTMAS IN JULY is a sweet, snappy, comic gem In Preston Stuges' 1940 madcap romp CHRISTMAS IN JULY , a young clerk (Dick Powell) goes on a premature shopping spree after he believes-mistakenly-that he has won a $25,000 slogan contest. Critic Jonathan Rosenbaum, who regards the movie as one of his 100 favorite films of all time, has called it "sublimely wacko?a riotous satire of capitalism." (Occupy Wall Street protesters should approve.) See it in a 35mm print from the Universal Pictures studio archive on Saturday or Sunday; those attending on Sunday should allow extra time to park as there's another event at CIA that afternoon. Print this post and present it at the box office and pay only $7 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Tarkovsky's metaphysical masterpiece STALKER receives rare theatrical screening Andrei Tarkovsky's mesmerizing 1979 sci-fi epic STALKER is set in a nameless police state in a post-apocalyptic future. There a skin-headed guide with special powers (a "stalker") leads a writer and a scientist into a fenced-off, forbidden Zone-part primeval forest, part post-industrial wasteland-toward its mysterious inner sanctum, where one's deepest desires are said to come true. Undistributed on film in the U.S., STALKER is regarded by many as Tarkovsky's supreme masterpiece. It must be seen in 35mm on the big screen, and on Sunday Clevelanders have a rare opportunity to do just that, when we screen a print from Europe. Don't miss it! (FYI, MEETING ANDREI TARKOVSKY, a new documentary about the late Russian director, shows on Wed., 10/26 at 6:30 pm at the Cleveland Museum of Art with filmmaker Dmitry Trakovsky in person.) Take heed: buy tickets to TAKE SHELTER now You can be among the first to see the highly acclaimed new drama TAKE SHELTER when the Cinematheque presents a special sneak preview of it on Thursday, October 27 at 8:00 pm with one of the film's producers, Tyler Davidson, in person. But only if you have a ticket. Because the number of tickets we can sell to this shot-in-Ohio movie that stars Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain is limited, we're selling $9 and $7 tickets in advance at BrownPaperTickets.com . You'll pay a little more, but you'll also be guaranteed a seat.
