Blog . 8/19-20: Certified Copy, Two By Yilmaz Guney & More!
Juliette Binoche stars in masterful "voyage in Italy" CERTIFIED COPY. Juliette Binoche won the Best Actress prize at last year's Cannes Film Festival for her performance in CERTIFIED COPY, the new French/Italian film by Iran's master filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami (TASTE OF CHERRY et al.). Binoche plays a French antiques dealer living in Italy with her 11-year-old son. When a British writer comes to deliver a scholarly talk on reproductions and authenticity, she offers to show him the Tuscan countryside. Their twisty road trip becomes an endlessly morphing, emotional odyssey through male-female, husband-wife relationships-a singular "voyage in Italy" that echoes Roberto Rossellini's revered 1954 film of that name. CERTIFIED COPY is a true art film, and easily one of the best movies of 2011. Don't miss it this Friday or Saturday. Two lonely people and a baby star in wry Peruvian comedy OCTUBRE (OCTOBER) Daniel and Diego Vidal's OCTUBRE (OCTOBER) is a deadpan 2010 Peruvian comedy-drama that evokes the droll work of Jim Jarmusch and Aki Kaurismäki, as well as the wonderful 1994 Uruguayan comedy WHISKY. In it, a lonely, hard-hearted, middle-aged moneylender in Lima takes in a baby he finds on his doorstep one day. He hires the super-religious spinster next door to care for it while he tries to find the child's mother among the neighborhood prostitutes. Lo and behold, a miracle happens! This acclaimed first feature by two thirtysomething brothers was named a "Critics' Pick" by The New York Times, which called it "(an) unassuming, low-key charmer." OCTOBER comes early this year: on Friday and Saturday. HOPE opens four-film Yilmaz Guney series With his pivotal 1970 work HOPE , Yilmaz Güney, who was Turkey's most popular actor during the 1960s, embarked on the road to becoming Turkey's most celebrated filmmaker. HOPE saw Güney forsaking the mindless action melodramas that had made him famous and taking his work in a semi-autobiographical, socially-conscious new direction. In doing so, he struck a chord with the long-suffering Turkish public. The movie stars Güney as a put-upon everyman named Cabbar, a debt-ridden cart driver struggling to feed his large family. When one of his two horses is struck by a Mercedes and dies, the desperate Cabbar has to work even harder to make ends meet, while also seeking justice for the injury. Initially banned in Turkey, HOPE evokes great postwar Italian neorealist works like THE BICYCLE THIEF. On Friday you have a very rare chance to see it in a new 35mm print imported from Turkey. THE HERD is another hard-hitting Guney film Scripted by Yilmaz Güney while he was in prison for murder, and directed by proxy, the 1978 Turkish drama THE HERD is a powerful social drama that chronicles the disintegration of a family of naïve, nomadic shepherds as they transport their sheep from rural Anatolia to urban Ankara. The Holt Foreign Film Guide calls this important work by the great Güney "abrasive, violent and lyrical." On Saturday you can see it in a new, 35mm color print imported from Turkey. Print this post and present it at the box office and pay only $7 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week!
