July 14-17: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Keir Dullea In Person, Black Christmas & More!

07/12/11  |  Posted by Cinematheque  |  Posted in Cinematheque

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY returns to the big screen -- with star Keir Dullea in person! This weekend we present a "Keir Dullea Weekend" consisting of four movies starring the Cleveland-born actor. On Saturday night Dullea will appear in person to answer audience questions after two of them, DAVID AND LISA and 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY . Dullea's most famous movie role is certainly that of astronaut David Bowman in Stanley Kubrick's visionary 1968 sci-fi epic. As a crew member of American spaceship Discovery One, Bowman battles loneliness and the supercomputer HAL on his way to Jupiter and beyond. This visually dazzling meditation on human evolution, which was shot in 65mm and must be seen on the big screen, is one of the most iconic and influential films ever made. Even George Lucas called it "the ultimate science fiction movie." 2001 will show in a 35mm color & scope print on Saturday and Sunday, but Dullea will answer audience questions only after the Saturday screening. Special admission prices and policies ($10; members and CIA I.D. holders $8; no passes, twofers, or radio winners) will apply for that show, though those ages 25 & under will still pay only $5 with proof of age. For advance tickets, click here . Dullea also to appear with DAVID & LISA Keir Dullea became a movie star with his acclaimed performance in Frank Perry's 1962 drama DAVID AND LISA , a small, celebrated low-budget independent film set within a psychiatric institution. He plays David, a lonely and emotionally-stunted teenager who befriends Lisa (Janet Margolin), an equally lonely schizophrenic girl with two distinct personalities. Time magazine called DAVID AND LISA "the best American film of 1962"; here's a clip. Dullea will answer audience questions after Saturday's screening. Special admission $10, members and CIA I.D. holders $8, ages 25 & under $5; no passes, twofers, or radio winners. Bob Clark's thriller BLACK CHRISTMAS is another kind of "Christmas Story" Keir Dullea, Olivia Hussey, and Margot Kidder star in BLACK CHRISTMAS (aka SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT), a clever, chilling 1974 Canadian thriller from Bob Clark, who went on to make A CHRISTMAS STORY. BLACK CHRISTMAS is a less wholesome holiday classic than his shot-in-Cleveland crowdpleaser; it concerns a college sorority house plagued by a serial killer shortly before winter break. Adults can see it Thursday or Friday in a new 35mm color print. Keir Dullea teams with Laurence Olivier in Otto Preminger's BUNNY LAKE IS MISSING Laurence Olivier, Keir Dullea, Carol Lynley, and Noel Coward star in BUNNY LAKE IS MISSING , a 1965 Otto Preminger thriller shot in London. In it, an American single mother who has moved to England with her four-year-old daughter reports that her child has gone missing during her first day at pre-school. Olivier plays the police superintendent who leads the investigation, while Dullea is the distraught mother's journalist brother. Discover it in a new, fully-restored 35mm scope print on Friday or Sunday. BARRIER is 1960s Polish masterwork Fantasy and reality commingle in Jerzy Skolimowski's visually stunning third feature BARRIER (1966), one of the director's very best movies. A social critique leavened by dark humor, the film follows a disillusioned young medical student (Jan Nowicki) who aspires to live a meaningful life in a society suffused with materialism and bureaucracy. If you haven't yet attended any of the Skolimowski films in our current retrospective, time is running out. This is the last weekend for the series, and BARRIER is a good place to start. See it Thursday in a 35mm archive print imported from Poland. Skolimowski series concludes with 1967 HANDS UP!, banned for 14 years Filmed in 1967 but banned by Polish censors until 1981 (at which time the director added some newly shot footage to it), Jerzy Skolimowski's HAND'S UP! is a surreal, savage critique of Stalinism (as seen in 1960s Poland) as well as a meditation on the artist's place in such a society. The 1981 "prologue" to this fascinating meta-movie contains London-shot footage of Jane Asher (who starred in Skolimowski's DEEP END ) and Alan Bates (who starred in his THE SHOUT) as well as shots of bombed-out Beirut (where Skolimowski acted in Volker Schlöndorff's 1981 feature CIRCLE OF DECEIT). The movie, shown in a 35mm archive print from Poland, concludes our Skolimowski series on Sunday afternoon. Print this post and present it at the box office and see HANDS UP! for only $7 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member); it's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print out) Hear John Ewing on Around Noon on 7/13; Kaneto Shindo series starts next week Cinematheque Director John Ewing will appear on Wednesday's "Around Noon" show on WCPN 90.3 FM -- sometime between 12:10 pm and 1:00 pm. Then next weekend we show the first of four films by 99-year-old Japanese filmmaker Kaneto Shindo. "Survival Instincts: Four Films by Kaneto Shindo" runs from July 22 through August 13. It will showcase new or good prints of four of the very best movies by this veteran director who will turn 100 next April. Having directed 45 films (and written 158) between 1951 and 2011, Shindo is definitely a survivor. And survival is one of his recurrent themes. In the series' four films characters and real people survive by killing and looting wandering samurai (ONIBABA, pictured above, which opens the series), by hauling fresh water up steep cliffs daily (THE NAKED ISLAND), by rebuilding lives destroyed by war (CHILDREN OF HIROSHIMA), and by wandering the countryside for 50 years playing and singing music (THE LIFE OF CHIKUZAN). Shindo is a superb stylist with a stunning visual imagination-probably the result of his early apprenticeship to the great Kenji Mizoguchi. The series is co-organized with the Japan Foundation, which supplied two of the prints and imported them from Japan.
