Bertolucci's 1970 masterpiece THE CONFORMIST returns in gorgeous new print! Bernardo Bertolucci's voluptuously shot and stylized political thriller THE CONFORMIST (1970) is set in Mussolini's Italy, where a repressed upper-class prig (Jean-Louis Trintignant) tries to bury memories of a youthful homosexual encounter -- and murder -- by joining the Fascists. It's a way for him to "fit in"-and so are the many moral compromises that follow. Stefania Sandrelli and Dominique Sanda co-star in one of the great modern films, a sensuous Art Deco spectacle with cinematography by Vittorio Storaro and music by George Delerue. See it in a new 35mm color print on Friday or Saturday. French musical THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT opens three-film series "The Other Deneuve: Françoise Dorléac" Catherine Deneuve stars with her older sister Françoise Dorléac (who died in a car crash shortly after finishing the film) in THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT , a candy-colored 1967 musical by the same director-composer team (Jacques Demy and Michel Legrand) that made THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG. A tribute to Hollywood musicals, YOUNG GIRLS co-stars Gene Kelly and George Chakiris (WEST SIDE STORY). Set in a small seaside town, the film tells of twin sisters who yearn for life and love in the big city, but find plenty of romance close to home. Danielle Darrieux and Michel Piccoli co-star in this bonbon that the San Francisco Chronicle has called "a perfect musical." See it in a gorgeous 35mm color & scope print from France on Saturday only! Here's the original trailer. The presentation of this film is supported by a generous grant from Maison Française de Cleveland. Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton bomb BOOM! is John Waters' favorite film The late Elizabeth Taylor, a two-time Academy Award winner, made many great films. But Joseph Losey's BOOM! (1967), which co-stars her then-husband Richard Burton, is not one of them. A high camp classic, it is John Waters' all-time favorite movie. (He calls it "the greatest failed art film ever made." Here's a transcript of his introduction of it.) Based on Tennessee Williams' 1963 play The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore, BOOM! details the relationship between a penniless poet and the richest woman in the world (also the gaudiest, judging from the flamboyant costumes and jewelry) who lives with servants and guard dogs on a private island in the Mediterranean. Co-starring Noel Coward, the movie has never been released on DVD; maybe we know why. See it in a 35mm color & scope print on Monday night only! Paprika Steen gives blistering performance in 2010 CIFF favorite APPLAUSE Paprika Steen (THE CELEBRATION, THE SUBSTITUTE) gives one of the most unforgettable screen performances of the past two years in Martin Pieter Zandvliet's 2009 Danish film APPPLAUSE , a powerful drama acclaimed at the 2010 Cleveland Int'l Film Festival. Steen plays a successful Danish theatre actress named Thea Barfoed. On stage Barfoed portrays Martha in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Off stage she pretty much lives the role. Having destroyed her personal life with drinking and divorce, she now desperately tries to pick up the pieces. Give her a hand on Thursday or Friday. 100-year-old Mexican circus struggles for survival in touching CIRCO In Aaron Schock's 2010 documentary CIRCO , a multigenerational Mexican circus that has traveled to the country's impoverished hinterlands for well over 100 years struggles for economic survival in the 21st century. Internal forces-like family members tired of life on the road-also threaten its future. This affectionate, affecting documentary "is filled with beautiful images and haunting moments" (The Village Voice). Music by Calexico. The circus comes to town on Thursday and Saturday. HAMILTON introduces talented new Maryland filmmaker Matthew Porterfield HAMILTON (2006) is the auspicious first feature by fast-rising Maryland independent filmmaker Matthew Porterfield, whose acclaimed second feature PUTTY HILL plays at the Cleveland Museum of Art on Friday, June 24. Set in the blue-collar Baltimore suburb of Hamilton over the course of a few hot, sticky, summer days, the film focuses on a 17-year-old new mother and the baby's inarticulate, standoffish father as they try to define their relationship and come to grips with their new status as parents. Catch it Thursday or Friday. Print this post and present it at the box office and see HAMILTON for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week!
