6/30-7/2: 13 Assassins, Essential Killing & More!

Step aside, seven samurai. Make way for Takashi Miike's incredible 13 ASSASSINS 13 ASSASSINS , the new film from Japan's Takashi Miike (AUDITION, THE HAPPINESS OF THE KATAKURIS), is one of the crazily prolific director's very best. It's also one of the most acclaimed movies of 2011, with a rating of 87 out of 100 ! A samurai warrior recruits an elite team of killers ("a dirty baker's dozen," according to critic Nick Pinkerton) in order to eradicate the Shogun's evil brother. This funny and exciting action epic was named June's "Film of the Month" by Britain's Sight & Sound magazine. The Los Angeles Times calls it "a classic samurai movie?among the finest in the genre." Thrill to it in a 35mm color & scope print on the big screen on Friday or Saturday. Vincent Gallo stars in ESSENTIAL KILLING, first of six Skolimowski films coming in July Vincent Gallo nabbed the Best Actor prize at last year's Venice Film Festival for his wordless performance in Jerzy Skolimowski's latest film ESSENTIAL KILLING , an existential action movie. Gallo plays a Taliban fighter in Afghanistan who is captured and interrogated after killing three Americans. He is flown to a detention center in East Europe, but manages to escape into the cold, snowy wilderness that surrounds the base. This beautifully-shot, largely wordless thriller is an elemental drama that poetically ponders the human condition. Emmanuelle Seigner (Roman Polanski's wife) co-stars. The movie opens our six-film series "Jerzy Skolimowski: Polish Films" on Thursday night at 7 pm, when it will be introduced by Joanna Trzeciak, Assistant Professor in the department of Modern and Classical Language Studies at Kent State University, and followed by a reception (open to all ticket holders) organized by the Polish American Cultural Center. The film shows a second time, without the intro and reception, on Friday night. Here's the trailer. Jim Jarmusch's first film PERMANENT VACATION receives rare screening Jim Jarmusch's rarely-shown first feature, PERMANENT VACATION (1980), was made before STRANGER THAN PARADISE, the movie that made him famous. PERMANENT VACATION boats the same episodic structure and shaggy-dog appeal as his partially-shot-in-Cleveland classic. An aimless young man obsessed with Charlie Parker bops around lower Manhattan, bumping into a series of colorful characters-among them a car thief, a war vet, and a saxophone player (John Lurie). Catch it in a 35mm print this Thursday or Saturday. Print this post and present it at the box office and see this indie rarity for only $7 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out.) Here's a clip. (Yes, the film is in color!) French maid catches chess fever in delightful rom-com QUEEN TO PLAY Kevin Kline and Sandrine Bonnaire star in Caroline Bottaro's 2009 French film QUEEN TO PLAY , a "tangy comic bonbon" (The NY Times) about a hotel maid who becomes obsessed with chess. She sees the game as an aphrodisiacal arena where she can wage the battle of the sexes. Set on scenic Corsica, this is an unusual tale of female empowerment. The match begins Friday and Saturday. Cinematheque members can save 20% on subscription to Cineaste magazine Now in its 44th year of publication, Cineaste bills itself as "America's leading magazine on the art and politics of the cinema." Cinematheque-goers will find a lot of interest in the pages of this quarterly publication. In the last two issues alone, there are articles on NOSTALGIA FOR THE LIGHT (shown last weekend), UNCLE BOONMEE (shown two weekends ago), SHOAH (shown in March), FOUR LIONS (shown in January), CERTIFIED COPY (coming in August), and AURORA (coming in September). And that's just the beginning. The editor of Cineaste is currently offering a 20% discount to Cinematheque patrons who would like to subscribe to the magazine. So a one-year/four-issue subscription would cost $17.60 instead of $22.00. A two-year/eight issues subscription would cost $32.00 instead of $40.00, and a three-year/twelve-issue subscription would cost $47.20 instead of $59.00. To order, click here and mention the "Cleveland Cinematheque discount" in the Comments box on their secure store site. New ticket prices begin this week; last chance to make a gift during this fiscal year! Three new ticket prices go into effect starting this Thursday, June 30: (1) Cinematheque members will pay $7 per film instead of $6. (2) Your second film on the same day will cost $5, not $6. (3) Anyone ages 25 & under will be admitted for only $5. Proof of age required.
