4/1-2: Raging Bull & Shanty Tramp

RAGING BULL, co-written by Paul Schrader, returns in new 35mm print On Friday and Saturday we show a new 35mm print of Martin Scorsese's RAGING BULL (1980), one of the great modern movies, now celebrating its 30th anniversary. The movie is an electrifying portrait of middleweight prizefighter Jake LaMotta (Robert DeNiro), whose volatile demeanor and violent urges turn his family life into another kind of macho boxing ring. Joe Pesci and Cathy Moriarty co-star in this classic that was co-written by our recent special guest Paul Schrader. It's for adults only. SHANTY TRAMP is white-trash camp classic Joseph P. Mawra's 1967 SHANTY TRAMP is a classic piece of Southern sleaze that tells of a white-trash party girl (the shapely Lee Holland) who sleeps around and leaves destruction in her wake. But she really gets into a whole heap o' trouble when it is discovered that she prefers a young black man to randy bikers, the lecherous local evangelist, or her drunken, abusive father. This mash-up of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, ELMER GANTRY, and GOD'S LITTLE ACRE has something to offend everyone-even Northerners. Adults can see it Friday or Saturday. Print this post and present it at the box office and pay only $6 ($5 for Cinematheque members); it's our Deal of the Week!
