Spooky CARNIVAL OF SOULS: we're not in Kansas anymore (or are we?) Herk Harvey's 1962 CARNIVAL OF SOULS is not only the best movie ever made in Lawrence, Kansas. It is also one of the truly imaginative independent American horror films. A young woman who's a church organist survives a car crash and starts experiencing strange visions of a menacing phantom figure. She also finds herself drawn to an abandoned lakeside pavilion, where ghouls cavort. This eerie, low-budget creeepshow, strikingly-shot in b&w, echoes Maya Deren and Ingmar Bergman while anticipating George Romero. Watch the trailer and then catch it in a gorgeous 35mm print this Saturday or Sunday. Jacques Rivette returns with circus-set love story AROUND A SMALL MOUNTAIN Jane Birkin and Sergio Castellitto star in AROUND A SMALL MOUNTAIN, the acclaimed new movie by octogenarian French New Wave master Jacques Rivette (CELINE AND JULIE GO BOATING, LA BELLE NOISEUSE). This 2009 French/Italian production details an Italian man's growing fascination with a mysterious, melancholy woman who performs in a traveling circus in the south of France. It was a 2009 New York Film Festival selection. Read The New York Times review (they named it a "Critics' Pick") and then catch the whole film on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Young woman says "I see dead person" (her father) in chilling SCREAM OF FEAR In SCREAM OF FEAR , a terrific 1961 Hammer horror film inspired by PSYCHO and DIABOLIQUE, a wheelchair-bound young woman (Susan Strasberg) visiting her father's villa on the French Riviera is told by her stepmon (Ann Todd) that he's away on a trip. But then why does she keep seeing his corpse all over the place? With Christopher Lee; shown in a new 35mm studio archive print! Feel the chills on Saturday or Sunday. ART & COPY looks at real-life "Mad Men" ART & COPY , Doug Pray's fascinating, behind-the-scenes look at the advertising industry, profiles the real-life "Mad Men" who transformed modern culture with such ground-breaking campaigns as "Just Do It," "I ? NY," "Where's the Beef?, "Got Milk?" and "Morning in America," among others. Thursday's special showing of this 2009 documentary, co-sponsored by AIGA Cleveland and the CIA's Department of Communication Design, will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Mari Hulick, Head of Communication Design at CIA. On the panel will be Lizzy Lee of the design firm Rini Uva Lee; Connie and Mike Ozan of Twist Creative; and Greg Thomas of the marketing & advertising firm Point to Point. AIGA members pay only $6. LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, Swedish inspiration for "Let Me In," returns to the big screen When was the last time a vampire movie was voted the best foreign-language film of the year? Well, it was December 2008, when film-critic associations in Boston, Chicago, Florida, Toronto, Kansas City, and Washington, DC bestowed this honor on the Swedish fantasy LET THE RIGHT ONE IN . The movie is an elegant and unusual coming-of-age story that chronicles the relationship between a bullied 12-year-old boy and the pale, mysterious girl who moves in next door. Its American remake, LET ME IN, opened earlier this month. Now see the subtitled original and pay only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member) by printing this email and presenting it at the box office on Friday night. It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) SEX. Now that I have your attention, come see DESTRICTED, a film about sex In DESTRICTED six accomplished film and visual artists from around the world (including Larry Clark and Gaspar Noé) debut new short films about sex or sexuality. This provocative, controversial program, showing Monday, November 1, includes Richard Prince's House Call, Cecily Brown's Four Letter Heaven (pictured above), Marina Abramovic's Balkan Erotic Epic, Larry Clark's Impaled, Marco Brambilla's Sync, and Gaspar Noé's We F*** Alone. The movies range from explicit and stimulating to humorous and just plain strange. All are definitely for adults only, and no one under 18 will be admitted. GQ says DESTRICTED is "the best sex you can have with your clothes on." Films This Week Thu., Oct. 28, at 7:00 pm Post-film Panel Discussion!
