Blog . 8/19-22: Doors Doc, Indiana Jones And Temple Of Doom And More!
See The Doors as you've never seen them in new doc WHEN YOU'RE STRANGE Johnny Depp narrates WHEN YOU'RE STRANGE , Tom DiCillo's new documentary about the legendary 1960s rock band The Doors. Unlike most such movies, WHEN YOU'RE STRANGE features no talking-head interviews. It traces the checkered history of charismatic Jim Morrison and company via archival photographs and film clips, some of them extremely rare. Enter this Doors doc on Friday or Saturday. JOHANNA is new opera about sexy saint The Joan of Arc story is transposed to a modern hospital-and turned into an opera-in JOHANNA, an offbeat allegory from iconoclastic Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczó. (His DELTA was shown in May). Here Joan is a young drug addict who miraculously reawakens from a deep coma with the singular ability to heal the sick by having sex with them. Talk about the passion of Joan of Arc! Adults should make an appointment to see the whole film Thursday or Friday. Jules Dassin's PHAEDRA transposes Euripides to chic, affluent 1960s Europe The 1962 French/Greek co-production PHAEDRA was Jules Dassin's fourth film with his future spouse Melina Mercouri; it was made right after their international hit NEVER ON SUNDAY. Mercouri plays the wife of a shipping tycoon who falls in love with her grown stepson (Anthony Perkins). Never released on video or DVD, PHAEDRA has music by the great Mikis Theodorakis. Catch the movie in a 35mm print on Thursday or Sunday. Print this post and present it at the box office and see PHAEDRA for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Hold on to your fedora! INDIANA JONES AND TEMPLE OF DOOM is back on the big screen INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM (1984), Steven Spielberg's first sequel to RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, is almost never revived in theatres. Made right after E.T., this controversial movie that prompted the creation of the PG-13 rating is actually a prequel to RAIDERS in which Indy confronts an Indian religious cult while trying to retrieve a mystical stone. Though occasionally gross and violent (it's not recommended for younger children), the movie is mostly witty and thrilling, with dazzling action set pieces that confirm Spielberg's mastery of big-screen spectacle. Harrison Ford and Kate Capshaw star; John Williams did the music. Watch the trailer and then don't miss the 35mm color & scope print we will show on Saturday and Sunday! And if you want to see RAIDERS again, it's being shown outdoors on Wednesday at 9 pm as part of University Circle's Wade Oval Wednesdays http://www.universitycircle.org/uci.aspx?page=84. DAY AT THE RACES ends Marx Bros series; Saturday 5:30 pm show canceled! In A DAY AT THE RACES , the final film in our Marx Brothers series, Groucho plays Dr. Hugo Z. Hackenbush, a veterinarian masquerading as the medical director of a sanitarium where the wealthy Mrs. Upjohn (Margaret Dumont) is the most important patient. When developers coveting the hospital property try to expose Hackenbush as a quack, Groucho, Chico, and Harpo spring into hilarious action. Due to a room scheduling mix-up, the Saturday 5:30 pm showing of A DAY AT THE RACES has been canceled. So we will show it only on Sunday at 6:30 pm. Kids 12 & under $6. Anyone wearing Groucho glasses when buying his/her ticket also saves a buck. Here's the original theatrical trailer, if you'd like to see it.
