5/6-10: Red Riding Pt 1, The White Ribbon, Five Easy Pieces & More!

RED RIDING TRILOGY opens: first part of three-part "Yorkshire Ripper" crime saga The Red Riding Trilogy is a three-part film about the "Yorkshire Ripper," a serial killer who terrorized England during the 1970s and 1980s. Made for British television and adapted from four acclaimed novels by David Peace, the crime saga, which critic David Thomson has called "a tragic achievement that surpasses that of The Godfather," spans ten years. We will show the three parts over the next three weekends. (But each part stands alone if you choose to see only one or two of them.) Part 1, RED RIDING: 1974 , follows a young reporter researching a series of child abductions and murders who discovers that the crimes lead to the local corridors of power. Watch the trailer for RR 1974, then catch all of Julian Jarrold's thriller on Saturday or Sunday. Beautiful, atmospheric Magyar drama DELTA is a riverbank "Days of Heaven" A Hungarian brother and sister shack up on the banks of the Danube, infuriating the locals, in Kornél Mundruczó's story of forbidden love, DELTA . Winner of Hungary's top film prize for 2008, this moody, laconic, gorgeously shot new movie evokes the Edenic worlds of Terrence Malick. Catch it Thursday or Saturday. Stark, chilling WHITE RIBBON unearths the seeds of Nazism Who is responsible for a series of sadistic crimes in a God-fearing German farm community? That's one of the questions posed in Michael Haneke's new Austrian film THE WHITE RIBBON , set during the early 20th century. Another is why is this person doing all this? Winner of the Palme d'Or (top prize) at last year's Cannes Film Festival and the 2010 Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, "The White Ribbon" is flat-out one of the most acclaimed and honored films of the past year -- essential viewing. See (or re-see) it Thursday or Monday (on Monday there will be a post-film discussion led by Cinematheque Director John Ewing). In fact, print this post and present it at the box office and pay only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Jack Nicholson gives his first great lead performance in FIVE EASY PIECES Jack Nicholson plays a disenchanted piano prodigy who rejects his privileged upbringing for a lower-middle-class life working on oil rigs in Bob Rafelson's 1970 classic FIVE EASY PIECES , which has been fully restored for its 40th anniversary. Nicholson's galvanizing performance captured the aimlessness, rootlessness, and restlessness of a generation. Susan Anspach and Karen Black co-star. Watch the original trailer and we think you'll want to see this classic again -- or experience it for the first time -- this Saturday or Sunday night. Hear John Ewing on Around Noon Cinematheque Director John Ewing will be an in-studio guest on WCPN's "Around Noon" radio show this Thursday. Tune in to 90.3 FM and hear him sometime between 12:10 pm and 1:00 pm. Or listen online at http://www.wcpn.org.
