4/24-27: Bernard Hermann weekend with CITIZEN KANE, MARNIE & more!
Blog . 2/11-14: Casablanca, Play It Again Sam, Still Walking & More!
It's CASABLANCA for Valentine's Day! We're pleased to present two screenings of one of the most romantic (and beloved) movies of all time this coming Valentine's Day weekend. CASABLANCA , the 1942 WWII-era drama starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, will show on Saturday at 5:15 pm and on Sunday, Valentine's Day, at 4:00 pm. This movie has so many classic lines and moments that it would almost be easier to list the ones that aren't immortal. Don't miss it in a 35mm print on the big screen! And bring someone you at least like a lot. (Scroll down to see another, related Valentine's Day film at the bottom of this column.) STILL WALKING: a magnificent new Japanese masterpiece Last weekend we presented the Cleveland premiere of Claire Denis' "35 Shots of Rum," the second best-reviewed movie of 2009 (right behind "The Hurt Locker") according to the website metacritic.com . This weekend we present movie #3 on the metacritic "most acclaimed" list: Hirokazu Kore-eda's STILL WALKING . Like the classic Ozu films that partly inspired it, "Still Walking" is a Japanese family drama. In it, a grown brother and sister return to their childhood home, and their elderly parents, on the 15th anniversary of the accidental death of their brother. It's an emotionally tumultuous homecoming, to be sure, but there is beauty and transcendence beyond the pain. Don't miss it Friday or Saturday. More corporate pranks fill hilarious, gutsy THE YES MEN FIX THE WORLD Anti-globalization activist-pranksters Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno (better known as the Yes Men) pose as representatives of Dow Chemical, Halliburton (above), Exxon, and HUD in their hilarious and subversive new film THE YES MEN FIX THE WORLD , "Jackass" for the corporate class. Prepare to laugh at (and applaud) their gutsy, pointed antics on Saturday or Sunday. Legal thriller STORM offers peek at Hague war crime trials In the new German legal thriller STORM , a lawyer in The Hague needs the help of a reluctant young Bosnian woman to prosecute a Serbian army commander accused of war crimes. Kerry Fox and Anamaria Marinca (from "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days") star in this mostly English-language film that lets us observe the inner workings of the World Court, which we hear about in the news but rarely see up close. Print this email and present it at the boxoffice on Thursday or Friday and see "Storm" for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Japanese SILENCE opens "Jesuits in Film" series sponsored by John Carroll Univ. Based on a Shusaku Endo novel, Masahiro Shinoda's celebrated but rarely-shown 1971 Japanese film SILENCE ("Chinmoku") explores the persecution of Portuguese Jesuit missionaries in 17th-century Japan. The movie has long been a favorite of Martin Scorsese, who plans to remake it some day. "Silence" kicks off a "Jesuits in Film" series sponsored by The Cardinal Suenens Center at John Carroll University. (The series' other five films will show free of charge on the JCU campus.) Jesuit historian Howard Gray, S.J. of Georgetown University will introduce the movie this Thursday at 6:30 pm. Spirit of Bogie haunts hilarious Woody Allen comedy PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM A clueless, nerdy, relationship-impaired Woody Allen looks to Humphrey Bogart for advice on dating and romance in the hilarious 1972 comedy PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM , showing Sunday night (Valentine's Day) aproximately one hour after "Casablanca." (A separate admission is required.) Even though Woody Allen didn't direct this movie, it remains one of the comedians's funniest films. It's based on his stage play and co-stars his regular sidekicks Diane Keaton and Tony Roberts. Jerry Lacy plays Bogie. COLLAPSE book on sale at box office If you missed the movie COLLAPSE when we showed it at the Capitol Theatre on January 13, you can still buy the book that inspired it. Written by the film's subject, Michael C. Ruppert, the book is entitled "Confronting Collapse: The Crisis of Energy and Money in a Post Peak Oil World." In it, Ruppert offers "a 25-point program for action." We have eight copies of the book left and each can be purchased for $15 at the Cinematheque box office, while supplies last. Cash only, please.
