This Week At Cinematheque Dec 18-21

12/16/08  |  Posted by Cinematheque  |  Posted in Cinematheque

This is our final weekend before we close for two weeks for the year-end holidays. And it's a great weekend. We are pleased to bring back a 1943 masterpiece by Denmark's Carl Dreyer, Day of Wrath (pictured), a psychologically complex drama that film critic Pauline Kael called, "the most intense, powerful film ever made on the subject of witchcraft." We also show the latest, and perhaps last film, of 88-year-old French director Eric Rohmer, The Romance of Astrea and Celadon, a tale of young lovers, shepherds and shepherdesses, nymphs and druids in 5th-century Gaul. Back by popular demand is Mike Judge's superb animation collection The Animation Show 4, containing four shorts that will be showcased at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. More animation of a different sort will be seen in Jim Henson's beloved Muppets Christmas special from 1977, Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas (shown along with three other Muppet holiday shorts, kids 12 & under admitted for only $5). And we conclude our series of counterculture underground classics directed by Robert Downey Sr. on Sunday with his Pound and Moment to Moment. Our new Jan-Feb calendars will be available for pickup this week. If you can't wait, you can also see a pdf of our next schedule in the "Schedule Downloads" section of our website.Thank you for your support throughout 2008!
