Material Matters
Course No. FIB377.2 Credits: 3
Faculty Christina Cassara
This is an advanced level studio class, which will offer the student a more sophisticated understanding of the inter-relationship between material, process and idea. The cultural and historic references of materials and processes play a powerful role in communication. To further that investigation and use it to support work, lectures and discussions will ask questions about the definitions and norms of the European/Mainstream art system. Topics will include, for example, the place of art within the gallery system and the role of art in Ônon/EuropeanÕ cultures; the relationship between Art and the Everyday; the relationship between Realization and Representation; and the role of Social Participation in an art practice. Other topics will be guided by the work being done by the students enrolled in the class. Open elective, limited to Juniors and Seniors. Required for FMS Seniors. 3 credits.
