CIA STUDENTS CROSS-REGISTERING AT OTHER INSTITUTIONS:
The Cleveland Institute of Art students who are enrolled full-time and who are in good academic standing may take one course per semester during the academic year at any of the following member colleges and universities of the Northeast Ohio Council on Higher Education (NOCHE):
Baldwin-Wallace College
Case Western Reserve University
Cleveland Institute of Music
Cleveland State University
Cuyahoga Community College
David Myers College
Hiram College
John Carroll University
Lake Erie College
Lakeland Community College
Lorain County Community College
Notre Dame College of Ohio
Ursuline College
Cross-registration is usually limited to third, fourth, and fifth year students and to all Medical Illustration majors. Exceptions may be made in the cases of transfer foundation students who may have room in their schedules due to transfer credits received. Cross-registration is limited to subjects not offered at the Institute. Admission at the host institution is granted on a space-available basis. The cross-registered course is considered as part of the student's full-time enrollment. Additional tuition is not charged unless total credit hours exceed 15 and the student does not have at least a 2.5 cumulative gpa. Lab fees or other fees may be charged by the host institution. Except for Medical Illustration majors, credits for cross-registered courses are treated as transfer credits. Grades of C or better must be achieved in order for the credits to transfer back to CIA. The grade for a cross-registered course does not affect the student's gpa at CIA. To cross-register, students must first receive approval from the CIA Registrar's Office (McCullough Center, Rm. 202). Current course schedules from most of the NOCHE institutions are available in the Registrar's Office.
Cross-registration to CIA is restricted to evening Continuing Education classes unless the student is a declared studio art major. Studio art majors from other institutions interested in cross-registering for day, degree courses must secure permission from the CIA Admissions Office. (Courses in the degree program not open to cross-registrants include: Graphic Design, Illustration, Industrial Design, Interior Design, and Medical Illustration.) Cross-registrations for degree program courses are processed through the CIA Registrar's Office (McCullough Center, Rm. 202) and are accepted no earlier than the week prior to the start of classes.
Cross-registrations for evening Continuing Education courses are processed through the Continuing Education Office and are accepted no earlier than the first evening of classes. Prior permission from the CIA Admissions Office to cross-register for Continuing Education courses is not required.
All students cross-registering to CIA from other institutions must have an approved cross-registration form, in addition to any other requirements mentioned above, before the cross-registration is accepted.
Questions regarding cross-registration may be directed to the Registrar's Office by phone (216-421-7320) or by email (registrar@cia.edu).
CIA uses a dual grading system, allowing instructors to separately evaluate a student's accomplishment and effort.
Accomplishment:
A 4.0
A- 3.7
B+ 3.3
B 3.0
B- 2.7
C+ 2.3
C 2.0
C- 1.7
D+ 1.3
D 1.0
D- 0.7
F 0.0
P Pass
W Withdraw
I Incomplete
AU Audit
NG No grade issued by instructor
Effort (optional):
E Excellent
S Satisfactory
U Unsatisfactory
To compute a grade point average (GPA), each grade (in points) is multiplied by the number of semester hours that it represents; total points are then divided by total semester hours. Grades of "incomplete" must be made up for a letter grade by the end of the fourth week of the following semester in order to avoid failure of the course. Students wishing to change a course to audit status must do so by the end of the eighth week of the semester. An audited course carries the same tuition charge as a course taken for credit.
CIA's Bachelor of Fine Arts program is approved for VA educational benefits. VA certifications for benefits are processed through the Registrar's Office. Students must be accepted and enrolled in the degree program before enrollment certifications are forwarded to the VA. VA certifications for new students are processed during the first week of the semester. The student should receive the first benefits check 4-6 weeks following certification. Returning students may request advance payment of their first benefits check during the summer. Advance payments are sent directly to the CIA Student Accounts Office and are applied directly to the student's tuition account. Advance payment covers the first two months of benefits payments. All subsequent benefits checks are sent directly to the student. Students must be certified by the Registrar's Office for VA benefits every year in which they are enrolled. Questions regarding VA benefits should be directed to the Registrar's Office by phone (216-421-7321) or by email (registrar@cia.edu).
