After graduation, the possibilities are endless—your major may lead you to opportunities you never even imagined. And although each field of study can lead to specific careers, many careers are available to all artists, regardless of major.

Here is a sampling of some of the opportunities available to professional artists and designers-

  • Animation Artist [Provides animation for television commercials, web sites, film and video. Works closely with producer, director, art director and the client.]
  • Art Director [Oversees design, planning and production of publications, advertising and graphics.]
  • Artist in Residence [Usually works with students within a high school or college. Shares his/her skills, conducts critiques and assists with projects that usually result in a gallery showing.]
  • Automotive Modeler [Works within manufacturing or design firms and is responsible for the creation of product models using various materials such as wood, metal, clay and plastic foam.]
  • Commercial Photographer [Photographs people, products or clothing for catalogs, advertisement and web sites.]
  • Commissioned Craftsperson [Creates one of a kind pieces for clients on commission such as jewelry, dinnerware, weavings, flatware or glass.]
  • Costume Manager [Keeps track of and repairs costumes for stage productions. May be called on to make alterations to a costume to fit the actor and certain idiosyncrasies of the role.]
  • Display Designer [Designs merchandise displays for stores, museums and galleries. Creates exhibit display for conventions.]
  • Freelance Artist [These artists enjoy the freedom of choosing their jobs and clients. Offers a flexibility of schedule and diversity of working situations not found in the corporate setting.]
  • Gallery Assistant/Apprentice [Duties range from working closely with artists to advertising openings to actually preparing the gallery for a specific exhibition.]
  • Graphic Designer [Designs logos and layouts for posters, magazines, brochures and web sites. Works independently or within an organization.]
  • Illustrator [Illustrates ideas either for editorial use, advertising or for book illustrations. Works independently or within an organization.]
  • Interior Designer [Works with architects in planning layout of commercial spaces such as restaurants, malls, office buildings and schools.]
  • Scientific Illustrator [Creates drawings and graphics typically for medical publications such as textbooks, magazines and brochures. Often work in research facilities and advertising firms.]
  • Poster Artist [Produces limited edition fine art prints for for clients such as popular bands, venues or theatrical productions.]
  • Product Designer [Designs/redesigns consumer products for the manufacturing industry. Understands ergonomics, the uses of various materials and processes.]
  • Production Jeweler [Produces handmade jewelry in limited editions or creates unique designs for high-end department stores or boutiques.]
  • Set Designer [Creates sets for theatrical productions, concerts, theme parks or television.]
  • Studio Artist [Creates an inventory of product for sale via galleries and studios. Also takes commissions from private and public organizations and individuals.]
  • Studio Assistant [Works directly with an experienced artist, design or photographer. Proficient in various processes and procedures such as casting, printing or photography.]
  • Surface Designer [Designs wallpaper, photomurals, printed patterns and tapestries.]
  • Textile Conservationist [Works within museums /historical societies to provide technical/historic expertise to maintain antique woven materials.]
  • Textile Designer [Provides designs for upholstery, wall and floor coverings.]
  • Web Site Designer [Provides design and expertise in current visual art-based computer programs such as streaming audio and video. Works independently or within an organization to market products and services through the web.  May design games or work with animation.]
