ABOUT CIA

The Cleveland Institute of Art was established in 1882. Over the years it has earned a reputation for being among the top ten professional colleges of art and design in the country. It is accredited by North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and is also a member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design and the Northeast Ohio Council on Higher Education.

The Institute attracts students who are serious about becoming professional artists and designers and who seek a school with a broad campus atmosphere that is both intellectually stimulating and artistically challenging. The Institute's goals of providing a superior education are consistent with its accrediting agencies and professional memberships.

The CIA's academic structure and integrity allow for unusual success in realizing its goals. Its foundation program strengthens existing skills and challenges students to explore the creative edges. Its broad-based liberal arts offerings give context to sixteen studio majors. The first year studio electives give students a chance to experiment with a major prior to second year major selection. And the optional internship program gives students real world exposure and contacts that contribute to a smooth transition to work or graduate school. With an enrollment of about 600 students, the Institute is a small artistic community. Eighty percent of our classes have less than twenty students. Our student-to-faculty ratio is ten to one which facilitates a master/apprentice teaching philosophy. Our student-to-computer ratio is six to one providing exceptional access to the latest technology. And our location in the park-like cultural center of the city, offers visual and educational resources from world renowned organizations like the Cleveland Museum of Art, Case Western Reserve University and over a dozen other museums, galleries, performing arts' organizations and colleges.

The Cleveland Institute of Art is an exceptional college experience in many ways. Its unique features have benefits that make our graduates competitive as gallery artists, product and transportation designers, graphic designers, photographers, contemporary craftsmen, and educators.
