Director of Communications

Cleveland Institute of Art is one of the nation’s leading independent colleges of art and design. Recognizing the importance of the visual arts in society, the college strives to make enduring contributions in education, research, and service.

We are seeking a Director of Communications. This position will work with the V.P. of Marketing & Communications, overseeing CIA’s brand message and content generation. The role is responsible for managing all communications plan activities and maintaining internal and external relationships with the organization’s constituencies, including the media, funders, alumni, and prospective students. Development and implementation of Admissions materials utilizing CIA’s website, press releases, weekly e-newsletter, advertising campaigns, and social media are primary responsibilities of this position. The Director of Communications is responsible for creation and dissemination of content that engages audience segments and leads to measurable action; and for deciding where, when and to whom to disseminate communications.

Other primary responsibilities include: assisting the Vice President of Marketing & Communications in developing and guiding the annual plan/strategy for all communications and media relations inclusive of the website, social media, internal and external e-communications, print collateral, editorial, and video messaging to consistently articulate the college’s brand. Managing all media relations, story pitches, media relationships, and story placement.

This position requires demonstrable experience working with content programming for web, print, and marketing; experience with media relations and press releases; experience with marketing analysis and advertising; and experience managing a staff.

Successful candidate will have 6-8 years of career experience writing and editing content, strong organizational abilities, and written/oral communication skills. Work experience in higher education is a plus.

Bachelor’s degree required. English, Communications or Journalism major preferred.
