Chief of Public Safety

Cleveland Institute of Art, a private college of art and design, is seeking a Chief of Public Safety. This position will organize and oversee all security operations, including the supervision of a third-party contract for security guards.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with local law enforcement and neighboring institutions
  • Develop and implement security policies, protocols and procedures
  • Control budgets for security operations and monitor expenses
  • Train and supervise security officers and guards
  • Attend meetings with other managers to determine operational needs
  • Plan and coordinate security operations for specific events
  • Coordinate staff when responding to emergencies and alarms
  • Review reports on incidents and breaches
  • Investigate and resolve issues
  • Create reports for management on security status
  • Coordinate the Institute’s response to government-required
  • Reports criminal information to authorities and testifies in court
  • Documentation, such as the annual report for the Clery Act
  • Analyze data to form proposals for improvements (e.g. implementation of new technology)

Essential Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Extensive prior experience in a law enforcement agency, such as a lieutenant position, is strongly preferred; proven experience as security manager or similar position will be considered
  • Experience using relevant technology and equipment (e.g. CCTV or IP security cameras and recording systems)
  • Experience in reporting and emergency response planning
  • Excellent knowledge of security protocols and procedures
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Outstanding organizational and leadership skills
  • Committed and reliable
  • High school diploma; Further education in security administration or similar field will be an asset
  • The candidate must be trained and licensed to carry a firearm
  • Candidate must possess a valid Ohio’s driver’s license free of significant violations
  • Knowledge of prevention & response to sexual violence is strongly preferred
  • Must be able to work well both independently and as a member a team
  • Must be familiar with hazards typical to the institution and related safety equipment and procedures
