Assistant/Associate Professor Chair Glass Department

The Cleveland Institute of Art is seeking a qualified individual to fill a full-time ranked position as Assistant / Associate Professor, and Chair of the Glass Department. The position offers the opportunity to join a vibrant and experienced faculty, to provide vision and innovation toward glass, art, and design education, to collaborate and to teach across disciplines. The Glass department at the Cleveland Institute of Art is known internationally by its faculty, alumni, and visiting artists. Glass is one of three majors in the Craft + Design Environment, and offers a comprehensive program that includes hot, warm, and cold glass, and a curriculum to afford a breadth of opportunities across contemporary art and design.

Qualifications:

  • A committed educator with demonstrated ability to teach at the college level
  • A successful and engaged glass artist / designer
  • A forward-looking individual with vision and leadership abilities to develop curriculum, professional partnerships, and facilities for a contemporary glass program, experience with digital technologies preferred
  • A service minded individual and team player who will engage with the faculty of the whole college
  • A strong technical and professional background with capabilities in the full scope of glass practices
  • Ability to engage students through methods and processes that support research based education, problem solving, team leadership, project development, and professional practices.
  • Familiarity with contemporary issues and historical context of both art and design in the glass field
  • Experience in teaching and operating in facilities that include a broad range of materials and technologies
  • Ability to foster interest in professional practices, entrepreneurship, and industry.
  • A strong advocate for students, alumni, and the Craft + Design program at CIA
  • A strong contributor committed to building and maintaining a professional and civil work environment for all employees of the Institute.

Position requirements:

MFA preferred, (or equivalent degree level of professional experience within the glass field), and a record of professional work and achievement. Additional experience preferred: teaching; curriculum development; course management; communication; organization of teaching materials (lectures, handouts, projects, initiatives, and student resources); leadership; internship/industry/education connection and collaboration skills; project management.

All full-time ranked faculty members are expected to participate in departmental and school-wide committees, curriculum development, advising of undergraduate students, and assessment of programs. Applicants must submit the following:

  • Letter of intent summarizing qualifications
  • Separate statement to present teaching philosophy
  • Current CV
  • 20 examples of current professional work (CD-ROM, Playable DVD, and/or portfolio website)
  • Separate disc of 10-20 examples of student work
  • List of 3 professional references with contact information
  • SASE for return of materials

Position begins August 2014. Review of applications is scheduled to begin January 20, 2014 and will continue until the position is filled. Incomplete and online applications will not be reviewed.
